Chelsea resident Sheldon Young was honored by family members at his 97th birthday celebration Sunday, Oct. 4 at Floramo’s in Revere.
The son of Norman and Sarah Young, Sheldon grew up in the Arlington Street neighborhood and attended Williams School and Chelsea High School. He was the oldest of nine children.
Sheldon is known widely as a prolific songwriter.
“My uncle wrote original songs for all of the family weddings, including my mother’s wedding,” said his niece, Karen Padulsky Poverman. “One of his songs about the Red Sox was played many times on the radio.”
It was Karen’s idea to hold a celebration for her uncle, Sheldon, and relatives came from as far away as North Carolina, Connecticut, and New Hampshire to be present on his birthday, 97 years to the day (Oct. 4, 1929) that he was born.
According to Karen, it’s her sister, Lynda Diamond, that deserves the credit for planning and organizing such “a wonderful celebration” in honor of their uncle, who was the oldest brother to their mother, Sandra Young Padulsky.
Sheldon is a popular resident of the Cohen Florence Levine Estates on Admiral’s Hill.
