Chelsea Fire Dept. Invites Public to Observe “Jaws of Life” Vehicle Extraction, Other Demos at Open-House

As part of a statewide observation of Fire Prevention Week, the Chelsea Fire Department invites the community to an Open House on Saturday, October 17, that will feature live demonstrations, including a “Jaws of Life” vehicle extraction and hands-on learning activities for all ages. The Open House will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Central Fire Station, located at 307 Chestnut St. Pizza will be served at this free, public event.

The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week, “Charge into Fire Safety; Safe Charging is a Superpower,” is timely, as several of the 194 reports of fire in Chelsea in the past year involved lithium-ion batteries or EVs, said Chelsea Fire Chief John Quatieri.

“We’ll be demoing how to use EV blankets that smother an electric vehicle fire, and a product that seals lithium-ion batteries to prevent fires caused by overheating,” said Quatieri, a 34-year Chelsea Fire veteran. “Our hope is that these demos, and our other open house activities, will help our community members be safe when charging devices with lithium-ion batteries, like phones, laptops, e-bikes, and scooters.”

This year’s open house will also include a chance to operate a fire hose alongside firefighters, experience a smokehouse simulator, and other hands-on activities for all ages.
