Osman hits for 36 as Red Devils beat Brighton in 2-OT

Junior captain Moe Osman poured in 36 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Chelsea High boys basketball team to an exciting 80-76 victory over Brighton High in double overtime last week at the Chelsea High gym.

Teammates Moses Kerenzo (19 points, including some big-time buckets in OT) and JJ Williams (a near triple-double with 16 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds) also contributed mightily to the winning effort.

Coach Cesar Castro and his crew, who stand at 3-4 on the season, will entertain Greater Boston League rivals Lynn English this evening (Thursday), Somerville next Tuesday, and Everett next Thursday. The opening tip for all three contests is set for 6:00.

Simon wins two medals at MSTCA NE Invitational

CHS track star Thania Simon earned two medals at the prestigious MSTCA Northeast Invitational that was held this past weekend at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury.

Thania brought home a second-place medal in the triple jump with a final landing of 34’-1” and a fifth place medal (among 175 entries) in the 200 meter dash with a sprint of 26.31.  Simon also just missed earning a medal in the 55 meter dash. Her time of 7.65 was good for ninth place in the preliminary heats.

Senior teammate Kiara Ramirez-Villata turned in a strong effort in the shot-put with a throw of 32’-3” that was good for 10th place in the large field.

For the boys, senior Ariel Chacon-Aracena came through with a superb performance in two events, finishing ninth in the shot with a throw of 46’-10” and 12th in the weight-throw with a toss of 42’-5”.

Simon wins two events in meet with Medford, Somerville

Chelsea High sophomore Thania Simon was the undisputed star at Thursday’s tri-meet with Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Medford and Somerville that was held at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Roxbury.

Thania took first-place vs. both opponents in two events, the 55 meter dash with a sprint of 7.62 and the long-jump with a leap of 16’-9.75”, to post a total of 20 points on the evening.

In addition, Simon’s long jump was an amazing two feet further than all of the other GBL competitors and her 55 dash time was the fastest among her GBL counterparts, all of whom also were competing at the Reggie that evening.

Kiara Villata-Ramirez was another double-winner for Chelsea, taking first place vs. both Medford and Somerville in the shot-put with a throw of 29’-10”. In addition, Kiara’s winning toss was fully two feet further than any other GBL girl on the night.

Lilly Serrano also put together a superb night, taking first-place vs. Medford and second-place vs. Somerville in the 300 dash with a time of 47.85 and a second vs. Somerville and a third vs. Medford in the 55 dash for a total of 12 points for the night.

Lauren Nadow sped to a first-place finish vs. Medford and a third vs. Somerville in the 55 hurdles with a clocking of 11.06.

Also scoring points for the Lady Red Devils in the tri-meet were: Katherine Benitez with a third vs. Medford in the 600 dash; Hazel Hatleberg with a second vs. both Medford and Somerville in the 1000; Angela Mejia-Martinez with a third in both the mile and the shot-put vs. both Medford and Somerville; and Perez Aly in the two-mile with a second-place vs.Medford and a third vs. Somerville.

The final tally showed Chelsea coming up short to Medford by a score of 51-35 and to Somerville by a score of 66-28. The Lady Red Devils will be back on the track at the Reggie this evening (Thursday) for another tri-meet with a pair of GBL foes.

Chacon-Aracena is best in GBL in shot, high jump

Although the Chelsea High boys indoor track and field team came up short against Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Medford (54-40) and Somerville (63-28) last Thursday in a tri-meet at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Roxbury, a number of Red Devils turned in superb performances.

Ariel Chacon-Aracena topped the Red Devil scoring chart on the evening with 20 points. Ariel took first place in two events against both Medford and Somerville, the high jump with a leap of 5’-6” and the shot-put with a throw of 45’-1”.

More impressively, Chacon-Aracena’s performance in the shot handily outdistanced all of the GBL contestants on the evening by about three and one-half feet. His leap of 5’-6” in the high jump also was a GBL-best for the evening.

Chelsea teammates who also recorded first-place finishes on the night were Xavier Guzman, who took first vs. Medford and second vs. Somerville in the 600 dash in a time of 1:38.49. Bryan Amaya-Manes, who turned in a first-place effort vs. Medford and a third vs. Somerville in the 1000 in a clocking of 3:07.02;  and Ivan Arias, who came across in first-place vs. Somerville and second vs. Medford in the mile in a time of 5:14.04.

Also scoring points for Chelsea were: Joao Cassim with a second vs. Medford and a third vs. Somerville in the 300 dash; Sherwin Kim with a third vs. Medford in the 300 dash; Adoni Alvarez-Umana with a second vs. Medford in the shot-put; Kevin Romero-Molina with a third vs. Medford in the shot; Sherwin Kim with a second vs. Medford in the 55 hurdles; and Kyle Leong with a third vs. Medford and a second vs. Somerville in the two-mile run.

In addition, the Red Devil 4 x 400 quartet of Xavier Guzman, Carlos Perez-Acosta, Ivan Irias, and Bryan Amaya-Yanes defeated their Medford counterparts by 3.92 seconds with their clocking of 4:03.79. They came up short by 3.11 seconds to Somerville.

The Red Devils will be back at the Reggie this evening (Thursday) for another battle with a pair of GBL rivals in a tri-meet.
