Boys soccer drops heart breaker, 4-3
The Chelsea High boys soccer team came up just short in its season-opening contest at Excel Academy this past Saturday, dropping a 4-3 decision that was decided on the last kick of the game.
After 10 minutes of level play between the teams, Red Devil Esteban Calderon broke the deadlock with the first goal of the season for coach Mick Milutinovic’s crew. Chelsea had a nice build-up with play from its backfield, which eventually led to Calderon finding himself 1-on-1 with the keeper and slotting the ball into the back of the Excel net.
CHS captain Christian Palacios made it 2-0 five minutes later when the Excel keeper kicked the ball out of his area. However, Palacios cleared the ball from the mid-field line and the ball took an awkward, big bounce over the keeper’s head and into the net.
Excel sliced the margin 2-1 with a quick response and then brought the contest back to level with a penalty kick before the end of the first half.
The teams played evenly after the intermission, but Chelsea earned a corner kick about 15 minutes into the half. Palacios took the corner and placed a perfect ball, scoring directly off the corner kick, to make it 3-0.
Excel once again bounced back to make it 3-3. Then with about a minute to go, Excel won a corner. The ball bounced around for a while before an Excel player took the final kick of the game for the game-winning goal.
“It was an unfortunate way to lose,” said CHS assistant coach Wiliam Estrada, “but we played well considering that we had many missing players. On another day, we could’ve won that game. Excel pushed us to play as well as we did that day.”
The Red Devils will make the short trek across the Parkway to meet archrival Everett at 7-Acre Park today (Thursday) at 4:15. They will host Lynn English on Tuesday and Revere next Thursday with both contests kicking off at 5:45 at the Stadium.
