CHS Baseball Team Tops Excel Behind Shutout by Soto

The Chelsea High baseball team put it all together at the plate, in the field, and on the pitcher’s mound to claim a 10-0 victory over the Excel Academy Charter School Wolves last Friday at Carter Park.

Red Devil starting pitcher Jeanluis Soto turned in a dominating performance, allowing just two hits, walking only one, and fanning 13 Wolves over the five-inning route.

At the plate, Chelsea High scored in every inning, with two in the first and second frames, one each in the third and fourth, and then ending the contest via the mercy rule with four markers in the fifth.

 Among the Red Devils who swung some heavy lumber were Elijah Rivera, who was 1-for-2;

Soto, who was 1-for-3; Jesse Castillo, who had a sacrifice fly, two walks, and two RBI; Xavier Santiago, who continued his hot bat, going 2-for-4 with an RBI; and Victor Murillo, who had  an RBI.

The Chelsea hitters were patient at the plate, drawing eight walks, and were aggressive on the basepaths, stealing five bases.

Coach Mike Lush and his crew, who now have four wins on the season, are scheduled to host Lynn English on Monday and Lynn Classical on Wednesday at Carter.

Simon Scores 16 Points for Girls Track

Chelsea High girls track sensation freshman Thania Simon continued her assault on the Lady Red Devils’ Greater Boston League opponents, scoring 16 points in last Thursday’s meet with Medford.

Thania took first place in two events, the 200 dash with a sprint of 27.0 (which was fully three seconds faster than Victoria Gammon, the runner-up from Malden, who is a senior) and the long-jump with a leap of 15’-5.5”, in which Simon also defeated Gammon.

Simon took second place in two events, the 100 dash with a clocking of 13.4, which was just 0.2 behind Gammon’s winning time, and the triple jump with a final landing of 31’-10”, an event won by Gammon.

However, Simon was not the only Lady Red Devil who turned in a fine effort on the day. Kiara Ramirez-Villata was a double-winner, taking the shot-put with a throw of 31’-5.5” and the discus with a spin of 91’-2”.

Senior Gizelle Rodriguez won the 400 dash with a clocking of 66.5; Hazel Hatleberg captured the 800 in a time of 2:52.8; and Lyssis Henderson won the 2-mile in 15:44.3, a time that was 30 seconds faster than her closest Lady Golden Tornado opponent.

Lauren Nadow scored six points for Chelsea with a pair of second-place finishes  in the 100 hurdles and the 400 hurdles.

 Adding three points to the CHS side of the scoresheet with second-place performances were: Marcyalla Louis-Jean in the 400 dash; Angely Mejia-Martinez in the 1-mile; and Lamari Davis in the discus.

Contributing single points with their third-place efforts were: Maria Sola-Hernandez in the 1-mile; Lamari Davis in the shot-put; and Esmeralda Mauricio Guzman in the long jump.

Strong Performances for CHS Track vs. Malden

Although the Chelsea High boys outdoor track and field team came up on the short end of its recent meet with Greater Boston League rival Malden last

Thursday, a number of Red Devils turned in strong performances.

Alex Flores-Chavarria led a Chelsea sweep in the 1-mile with a clocking of 5:11.1 He was followed by teammates Ivan Irias-Padilla (5:25.1) and Carlos Perez-Acosta (5:26.6), narrowly edging a Golden Tornado runner who came across in 5:27.4.

Alex also took second place in the 2-mile run and third in the long jump to score nine points on the day.

Sherwin Kim also scored nine points for the Red and Black with a trio of second-place finishes in the 100 hurdles, the 400 hurdles, and the triple jump.

Theo Joseph Seale scored six points for Chelsea with two second-place finishes  in the shot-put and the discus.

Adding three points for Chelsea with second-place finishes were Emerson Melgar Huezo in the javelin and Leeandro Castro in the long jump.

Adding single points to the CHS side of the scoresheet with third-place finishes were: Christopher Martinez in the 200 dash; Austin Freeman in the 400 dash; Bryan Amaya-Yanes in the 800;  Jose Amaya Raudales in the 2-mile; and Adonis Alvarez in the javelin.
