Joanne M. Evans

November 24, 1951 – October 11, 2023

Relatives and friends attended visiting hours on Wednesday, October 18th in the Welsh Funeral Home, 718 Broadway, Chelsea for Joanne M. Evans, 71 and her funeral will be conducted from the funeral home today, Thursday, October 19th at 11 a.m. Joanne passed away peacefully on October 11th after living courageously with breast cancer for the last nine years.

Born, raised and a lifelong Chelsea resident, she was one of seven children of the late Raymond and Evelyn (Cassidy) Evans. She attended St. Rose Parochial School and graduated from Chelsea High School in 1969.  

Joanne was married to Michael F. Nugent for 50 years and together raised one daughter and two sons.  She was passionately devoted to home and family.

Joanne also worked for the City of Boston, Tax Help Coalition, helping the underserved families as a financial advisor.  After she retired, she continued as per-diem consultant for the coalition.

In her lifetime she enjoyed spending time with family, especially her grandchildren.  She enjoyed traveling with her husband to Hawaii, the American Southwest, Nova Scotia, New Zealand and Ireland.  She was an avid reader, loved baking and watching British TV, especially The Great British Baking Show and The Antiques Road Show. She especially enjoyed preparing baked goods with her grandchildren.

She devoted her time and talents to suicide awareness, supporting the annual “Team Franky,  Out of the Darkness Community Walk, aiding in the prevention of and helping those affected by suicide.

Joanne  was predeceased by her husband, Michael F. Nugent and a sister, Nancy Evans. She is survived by her devoted children and their spouses: Jody Nugent and her husband, Frank Medbery and David Nugent, all of Chelsea and Michael Nugent and his wife, Lyn of Christ Church, New Zealand. She was the cherished grandmother of Mason Medbery, Max Medbery and Harper Nugent; dear sister of Susan M. Almeida of Billerica, Elizabeth Evans of Chelsea, Brian Evans of Saugus,  Janet Farrell of Marshfield and Jon Evans of Colorado; most loved sister-in-law of Jane Roblee-Smith and her husband, Rod of Wakefield and Denise Nugent of Peabody.  She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
