Girls Cross Country Wins First Two Meets

The Chelsea High girls cross country team won its first two meets of the season this past week, defeating Greater Boston League rivals Malden and Somerville.

In the meet last Wednesday with Malden on the Pine Banks course, senior captain Rosalinda Rojas and freshman Hazel Hatleberg blew past their Lady Golden Tornado rivals to finish 1-2 , followed by senior Jada Amezquita (4th overall), senior Marcaylla Louis-Jean (5th overall), and senior Ashley Mejia (7th overall).

“It was great to open up the season with a win for the girls,” said CHS head coach Reegan von Wildenradt.

This past Monday the Lady Red Devils defeated Somerville, 23-32, on Chelsea’s home course at Admiral’s Hill.  Rojas once again crossed the finish line in first place, followed by Hatleberg (3rd), Amezquita (5th), Iyssis Henderson (6th), and Mejia (8th).

“The girls had a fantastic showing,” enthused von Wildenradt. “We were really happy with how the girls performed against an always-competitive Somerville team. Everyone has stepped up to fill the shoes of senior captain Gizelle Rodriguez, who is out for most of this season due to injury. It’s very exciting to start the season with two wins on the girls’ side.”

On the boys’ side, the Red Devils came up short in both meets. In their encounter with Malden, Chelsea fell by a close score of 23-33. “It was a great race for the boys despite the loss,” said von Wildenradt.

Chelsea’s Alex Flores took first place, followed by teammates senior captain Jose Amaya (6th overall), junior Kyle Leong (7th overall), senior Jason Rodrigues (8th overall), and junior Sherwin Kim (11th overall).

Head coach Gloria Rodriguez and her crew were scheduled to take on defending GBL champ Revere yesterday (Wednesday). They will entertain GBL foes Medford tomorrow (Friday), Lynn Classical on Monday, and Lynn English next Wednesday at the CHS gym.

CHS Girls Soccer Shows Improvement

Although the Chelsea High girls soccer team came up short in its contests this past week with Greater Boston League rivals Somerville and Everett, CHS head coach Randy Grajal saw many encouraging signs from his squad.

In a  7-1 loss at Somerville last Tuesday,  freshman Yahira Jovel Rivas scored the goal for the Lady Red Devils, assisted by senior Alessandra Campos, who sent a nice through-ball to Yahira, who then delivered a perfect strike into the bottom right corner of the Somerville net.

Last Thursday the Lady Red Devils made the short trip across the Parkway to take on Everett. “This game was a much better game than the Somerville game,” said Grajal. “We lost 6-0, but we had many options on goal that ended up either being saved by their goalie or our shots went wide of the net.

“Sophomore Meleny Rodriguez worked tirelessly during the whole game,” noted Grajal. “As a midfielder she helped on defense when needed and supported our attack when we moved the ball up the field.”

Grajal and his crew have their next four games at home: Revere today (Thursday), Lynn Classical tomorrow (Friday), Malden next Tuesday, and Medford next Thursday.
