Comments from Chelsea La Colaborativa on Governor Healey’s migrant state of emergency declaration

Dear Community Members, Friends, and Supporters,

I trust this message finds you well. We are pleased to communicate some recent developments concerning the influx of refugees to Massachusetts and our organization’s response. Throughout this year, Massachusetts has demonstrated its compassionate spirit by welcoming an unprecedented number of immigrants, primarily from Haiti, into our state. These individuals have endured formidable challenges to reach our shores, seeking a new beginning and a better life.

In July, La Colaborativa proudly collaborated with State agencies and other organizations and residents to extend a helping hand to these migrants. As a dedicated social justice organization situated in Chelsea, a community comprised of 80% immigrants, we readily answered the call to provide essential impromptu services during this crisis.

Our dedicated staff, in partnership with various sister organizations and local allies on the front lines, rallied to offer comprehensive emergency assistance, including the establishment of an emergency shelter in the enVision Hotel in Everett that swiftly accommodated over 300 families. We ensured the provision of culturally sensitive and nutritious meals, available throughout the day. Furthermore, we addressed the critical health needs of these newcomers by conducting health screenings, administering necessary immunizations, and facilitating access to MassHealth insurance. During their time under our care, these migrants seamlessly became part of the La Colaborativa family. Together, we shared moments of laughter, tears, and even the joyous birth of four healthy new lives. We profoundly recognize the value that these families bring to our Commonwealth, and it is this recognition that drives our commitment.

The escalating number of migrants has higlighted the imperative need for united action, as underscored by Governor Maura Healey’s declaration of a State of Emergency. La Colaborativa is resolute in its determination to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with all stakeholders, both through our ongoing services and in collaboration with others ready to support this new wave of refugees. By aligning our day-to-day efforts with the Governor’s vision, we aim to support lasting solutions that empower these families to thrive within the vibrant tapestry of Massachusetts.

Continuing the path to Economic Stability

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Governor Healey for allowing us to play a pivotal role in the integration journey of these new families. It is in times of crisis that our commitment to local partnerships and unwavering teamwork truly shines. We also express our deepest appreciation to the families who have held us close during these trying times.

La Colaborativa is now embarking on a transition from these emergency assistance services to a renewed focus on enhancing our existing community-building initiatives, all of which will remain accessible to our new neighbors.

As we redirect our focus to our core programs, we are better equipped to support these and other newly arrived immigrants in the subsequent phases of their integration process. Our ongoing services encompass a range of vital initiatives, including food distribution to 7,000 community members every week, rapid reemployment initiatives, ESOL classes, housing assistance, a robust youth employment program, and more.

As an integral component of our comprehensive Economic Development programs, we have successfully assisted over 650 individuals in crafting impactful resumes, guided others through their job interview processes, and provided essential job training throughout the entirety of July. Moreover, this summer has witnessed the meaningful employment of over 300 youth from Chelsea, alongside the noteworthy accomplishment of graduating numerous individuals from our citizenship classes. These collective endeavors underscore our unwavering commitment to furnishing a comprehensive spectrum of assistance aimed at empowering our community, fostering gainful employment, and propelling individuals toward financial autonomy.
