CHS Football Team Hosts Keefe on Friday
The Chelsea High football team will be seeking its second win of the season when the Red Devils host Keefe Technical tomorrow (Friday) evening under the lights at Chelsea Stadium.
The opening kick-off is set for 6:00.
CHS Boys Soccer Tops Excel, 6-2
The Chelsea High boys soccer team earned a 6-2 victory over non-league opponent Excel Academy this past Saturday.
The Red Devils took control of the match from the outset, grabbing an early 2-0 lead on a pair of free kick goals by Steven Gamez and Ever Aguilar.
Aguilar made it 3-0 when he received a pass from Kevin Garcia and placed a nice shot across the goal.
The Red Devils enlarged their margin to 4-0 when a shot by defender Olvan Mendez was saved by the Excel keeper, but the rebound came out to Jefferson Ruiz, who was in the right spot for an easy conversion.
Jefferson notched his second goal of the game before the intermission when he received a nice pass from Gamez and took a shot that the keeper got a hand on, but which deflected off his hands into the back of the net.
The Red Devils went into cruise control mode in the second half, with Oscar Erazo scoring the lone goal for Chelsea when he tapped in a rebound after a save by the Excel keeper.
The Red Devils did not have as much luck on Tuesday in a loss to Everett.
After Chelsea conceded an early goal to the Crimson Tide, Jose ‘Smiley’ Melendez saw that the Everett keeper was off his line and crossed a nice ball to Mendez, who headed the ball into the back of the Crimson Tide net to bring the contest back to level at 1-1.
However, a pair of defensive errors allowed Everett to score two goals to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission. Chelsea got one back shortly into the second half when Melendez sent Ruiz up the left side with a nice pass. Although Jefferson’s shot was saved by the Everett keeper, Angel Rosales was in perfect position to put home the rebound to bring the Devils within a goal.
However, that would prove to be as close as Chelsea would get on the day. A perfect delivery by an Everett player late in the game found the top right corner of the CHS net to account for the 4-2 finale.
Coach Mick Milutinovic and his crew are scheduled to host Lynn English today (Thursday) and Revere on Tuesday. The Red Devils stand at 6-4-1 on the season with six games to play and are ranked 41st in Division 2. However, if Chelsea can finish the season with a .500 or better record, the Red Devils automatically will qualify for the post-season state tourney.
CHS Volleyball Wins Two of Three Matches
The Chelsea High volleyball team won two of its three matches this past week to stay above .500, the mark that is needed to qualify for the post-season state tourney.
Last Thursday, coach Gabriel Morales’s squad blanked Everett, 3-0, and then edged Malden, the second-place team in the Greater Boston League, the following day. The Lady Red Devils’ victory over Malden was only the second loss in the GBL for the Lady Golden Tornadoes.
Chelsea then took on an undefeated Revere team, which is in first place in the GBL, but came up short by a score of 3-0.
Morales and his crew were scheduled to face Medford yesterday (Wednesday) and will host Lynn English tomorrow (Friday). They will travel to New Mission next Tuesday.
The Lady Red Devils stand at 7-5 on the season with four matches to play and are ranked 42nd in Division 2. However, if Chelsea can finish the season with a .500 or better record, the Devils automatically will qualify for the post-season state tourney.
CHS Girls Soccer Continues to Improve
Although the Chelsea High girls soccer team came out on the short end of both of its contests this past week, coach Randy Grajal’s squad continues to show improvement as the season progresses.
Last Monday, the Lady Red Devils dropped a 5-0 decision to Lynn Classical and then fell to Somerville, 5-1, on Thursday.
In the latter contest, junior Alessandra Campos gave Chelsea a quick 1-0 lead, reaching the back of the Lady Highlander net just three minutes into the match.
“Alessandra continued to keep working throughout the whole game,” said CHS head coach Randy Grajal. “She created opportunities and kept the Somerville defenders on their toes during the game.”
The coach also had words of praise for senior goalkeeper Katie Arias.
“Katie gave us a consistent effort and made some amazing saves throughout the game,” said Grajal.
“This was by far our best game of the season and the team looks forward to continuing improving,” Grajal added.
The Lady Red Devils are scheduled to play at Lynn English today (Thursday) and will travel to Revere on Tuesday. They will host Medford next Thursday.
