The Chelsea High boys basketball team improved to 3-0 in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference (3-1 overall) with a 62-47 victory over Whittier Tech last Wednesday in the CHS gym.
Although the Red Devils were unable to pull away decisively from Whittier, Coach Jay Seigal’s squad grabbed a nine point lead at the intermission and never allowed it to drop below 10 in the second half.
“We turned in a solid effort at both ends of the floor,” said Seigal. “Whittier is good team, but we did what we had to do.”
Sammy Mojica turned in a stellar all-around performance that featured a quadruple statistical output with 17 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and three blocked shots. Backcourt mate and CHS Captain Felix Crespo also delivered what Seigal termed a “solid effort.”
The Red Devils will host a holiday tournament this week starting Wednesday evening at 7:00 against Masconomet Regional. The consolation and final will be Thursday, with Chelsea facing either Beverly or Triton, the other two teams in the tourney.
The Red Devil then will travel to former GBL rival Peabody on Monday for their first game of the New Year.
