When we think of legacy, we think of Carmen C. Nieves — a woman whose impact spans generations and continues to inspire all those fortunate enough to have experienced even a small part of her journey. Carmen passed away in 2019 after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. Each year, during the month of her birthday (May), we come together to celebrate her life and legacy through the things she loved most, in the place she loved deeply – the Jordan Boys & Girls Club.
Carmen worked at the Jordan Boys & Girls Club for more than 20 years and was often the very first person members and visitors would see when they walked through the doors — an interaction that immediately set the tone for a welcoming and joyful day ahead.
Over the years, she built countless meaningful relationships with members, families, and the broader community. During heartfelt moments of reflection shared by Elizabeth, a Jordan Club alum and family friend; Josh, former Jordan Club Executive Director and family friend; and Adetunji, former Jordan Club Director of Technology and family friend, we were reminded of how deeply Carmen’s kindness, and presence continue to impact the lives of so many.
This year’s celebration beautifully reflected the inspiration and light Carmen brought into every room. The event included several special moments and activities:
• Musical performance: Adam, among his many talents, performed a lovely trumpet rendition of Marc Anthony’s “Vivir Mi Vida” and more.
• Rock painting: Participants created keepsake pieces of art to take home.
• “Fill Your Bucket of Kindness” activity: This meaningful activity encouraged everyone to spread kindness and pay it forward.
• Family-style lunch: Guests shared a meal together, adding to the sense of community and connection that defined the celebration.
The celebration also featured the always-anticipated dance session led by Jeanette Velez, a dear friend of Carmens, whose energetic and joyful spirit got everyone moving, laughing, and connected. We look forward to next May and continuing to bring everyone together in honor of Carmen – someone who moved through her journey with integrity, love and strength and always embraced each moment.
A special thank you to Gina Centrella-O’Hara, Jordan Club ED and the Jordan Club staff for all they do.
