Edward M. Smigielski

 October 25 1938 – January 22, 2025

At the age of 87, Edward M. Smigielski passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, after a brief illness and a sudden decline in health. His passing leaves a notable absence in the lives of those who knew him, reflecting a life dedicated to family, community, and music.

Born on October 26, 1938, in Chelsea, Edward was the eldest son of the late Edward C. and Theodora (Sieczkarski) Smigielski. He grew up in a close-knit family with his two younger brothers, Theodore and Richard, instilling in them a shared commitment to improving their neighborhood and enhancing community life.

A lifelong resident of Chelsea, Eddie received his early education at St. Stanislaus Parochial School and graduated from Chelsea High School. He furthered his education at Bentley College, earning an associate’s degree in finance. Edward embarked on a career as an early computer programmer, where he wrote and implemented software for the airline industry, showcasing his innovative spirit and adaptability.

However, it was his passion for music that truly defined him. A talented musician, composer, and arranger, Edward favored the accordion and, in the 1960s, founded “Ed Smigielski and his Merry Musicians,” a lively polka band that brought joy to countless weddings, showers, and celebrations throughout the Boston area. He took great pride in his Polish American heritage, being an active member of the Polish Political Club and the Polish American Veterans, Post 13 of Chelsea.

Edward is survived by his brothers, Theodore A. “Ted” Smigielski and Richard M. Smigielski, both of Chelsea, along with a close extended family and many dear friends who will cherish his memory.

In harmony with his quiet and unassuming nature, funeral services will be private. Edward will be laid to rest alongside his parents in Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden, in the family plot. As we reflect on his life, we remember a man who embraced his roots, uplifted his community, and spread joy through his music—a legacy that will resonate for years to come.
