CHS football hosts Medford Friday night
The Chelsea High football team, which came up short by a score of 22-8 last week at Malden, will seek to get back on the winning track when the Red Devils, who are 2-4 on the season, host Medford tomorrow at Chelsea Stadium.
The opening kickoff for the Friday Night Lights affair is set for 6:00.
CHS boys move into tie for first place in the GBL
The Chelsea High boys soccer team enjoyed a highly-successful week, knocking off first-place Revere, 2-1, last Tuesday and then defeating Malden, 2-1, last Thursday to move into a tie for first place in the Greater Boston League with Revere.
The Red Devils had entered the week trailing Revere by three points in the GBL standings. However, Chelsea made up all of that ground thanks to their victories over the Patriots and Malden and the Patriots’ subsequent tie with Medford last Thursday.
Chelsea stood at 8-3-1 in the GBL with two remaining league games with Medford this past Tuesday and Lynn Classical today (Thursday) at Chelsea Stadium. The Red Devils defeated both teams in their first meeting earlier this season.
Revere’s record in the GBL entering this week stood at 7-2-3 with matches vs. Malden on Tuesday and at Somerville today (Thursday). Revere tied Malden and lost to Somerville in their matches earlier this season.
The Red Devils, who sport a 10-4-1 overall record and who already have punched their ticket for a Journey to the State Tourney, will conclude their season next Wednesday with a match against non-league rival Brighton at Chelsea Stadium at 4:00.
CHS girls soccer close to tourney spot
The Chelsea High girls soccer team, which stands at 7-6-2 on the season, needs three points in its final four matches in order to punch their ticket for a Journey to the Tourney, the MIAA post-season state tournament.
The Lady Red Devils traveled to Revere High School last Tuesday and played a strong match despite falling 2–1. Revere capitalized on two nearly identical plays in which a long defensive clearance led to their striker breaking free on goal and finishing 1-v-1 against the Chelsea keeper.
The Lady Red Devils continued battling and created opportunities throughout the second half. Their hard work paid off late in the game when sophomore Emili Rodriguez Rodriguez struck a free kick that forced a rebound from the goalkeeper. Freshman Anto Rodriguez Rodriguez was quick to react in the box, finishing the loose ball to bring the score to 2–1 with just three minutes remaining.
Despite the late surge, Chelsea ran out of time to find the equalizer. “It was a disappointing loss given the team’s level of effort, but the Lady Red Devils continued to show resilience, work rate, and growth,” said CHS head coach Randy grajal. “This performance reflects a team finding its rhythm, fighting for every ball, and committed to improvement moving forward.”
The Lady Red Devils bounced back two later to earn a hard-fought 1–0 victory on the road against Malden High School on Thursday. The lone goal of the match came late in the first half, when a cross from sophomore Emili Rodriguez Rodriguez was misplayed by a Malden defender and redirected into the back of the net, giving Chelsea the lead with just two minutes remaining before halftime.
The second half was a true defensive battle, with Malden pushing aggressively for the equalizer. However, Chelsea held firm, displaying outstanding organization and composure. Katherine Benitez turned in a standout performance as a defensive midfielder, controlling the center of the field and disrupting Malden’s attacks before they could build momentum.
“Our back line — senior Andrea Mendez, freshman Eliana Enriquez Hernandez, junior Ashley Damas Ruiz, and senior Kimberly Estrada Mazariegos — formed an impenetrable wall, winning challenges, clearing threats, and denying Malden any clean looks at goal. The defensive line was supported at all times by their midfielders and strikers,” said Grajal.
“This win was a testament to the team’s effort, discipline, and unity,” Grajal continued. “The Lady Red Devils fought for every ball and protected their lead with determination, demonstrating once again their growth as a cohesive and resilient unit.”
Grajal and his crew were scheduled to host Medford this past Tuesday and will travel to Lynn Classical today (Thursday). They will entertain Boston International next Monday at 5:00 and O’Bryant High next Wednesday at 5:45.
