The new Chelsea Youth Baseball and Softball League held its opening day program Sunday at the Mary C. Burke Complex field.
League President Jack Grigorian said that more than 120 boys and girls (ages 7-15) will be participating this season.
Grigorian thanked the Boston Red Sox for donating all the baseball jerseys and equipment to the league.
“Whatever we needed, the Red Sox helped out,” said Grigorian, who also thanked City Manager Fidel Maltez for his donation and support of the league.
Fidel Maltez had the much-deserved honor of throwing out the first baseball of the 2025 season.
“We are so excited to bring sports back,” said Maltez. “This administration has had a huge focus on increasing opportunities for all of our kids to participate in sporting activities. We made a huge decision by hiring a dedicated director of athletics [Charles Giufrida], who’s doing a phenomenal job and really bringing collaboration back into the city. Today [Sunday] we’re honored to have the wonderful Red Sox Boston organization here in Chelsea. And of course, Wally [the Green Monster] came to visit with the championship trophy. These opportunities really highlight what is possible when we work together in Chelsea.”
