Retired Chelsea Police Lieutenant Robert Griffin attends prestigious Inaugural Ball honoring military heroes

Retired Chelsea Police Lieutenant and Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander Robert Griffin had the distinct honor of attending the Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball on Inauguration Day in Washington, D.C. Griffin was accompanied by his girlfriend, Pam Buttner, at the prestigious event hosted by the American Legion.

The Salute to Heroes Ball, a tradition since 1953, recognizes the extraordinary service of Medal of Honor recipients. This year, over 26 of the 61 living Medal of Honor recipients were in attendance, offering a rare and humbling opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifices of these military heroes.

While at the event, Griffin had a chance to reconnect with Medal of Honor recipient Leroy Petry. The two served together with the Special Operations Joint Task Force in Afghanistan. Griffin described Petry as “an awesome young soldier” when they first met, adding, “He was just an ordinary young American who ultimately did some extraordinary things when it mattered most.”

Leroy Petry earned the Medal of Honor for his actions on May 26, 2008, during a firefight in Paktia Province, Afghanistan. Despite already being wounded by enemy gunfire, Petry displayed exceptional courage when he selflessly picked up a live grenade to save his fellow Rangers. The grenade detonated in his hand, severing his right hand, but his heroic actions prevented further casualties and exemplified valor under fire.

Griffin and Buttner were also invited to the Capitol Hill swearing-in ceremony earlier in the day, courtesy. However, the event was moved indoors due to record-breaking cold weather.

“It was an unforgettable experience to be in the presence of so many American heroes and to share this moment with Pam,” Griffin said.

The Inaugural Ball and swearing-in ceremony served as poignant highlights for Griffin, a dedicated public servant and veteran who continues to serve his country as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy Reserve.
