Winter Sports Season Kicks Into Gear This Week
The winter sports season for Chelsea High athletes will get underway this coming week. Coach Cesar Hernandez and his girls and boys indoor track and field teams will take part in this Sunday’s MSTCA Small School Winter Festival at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, the first of many invitational meets during the winter indoor season.
In addition, the Red Devil tracksters will take on all seven of their Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals (Lynn English, Lynn Classical, Revere, Everett, Medford, Malden, and Somerville) starting next Friday (December 15) with a tri-meet against Everett and Lynn Classical. All of the GBL meets this season will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
The CHS boys and girls basketball teams will open their 2024 campaigns this coming Tuesday. Coach Cesar Castro and his boys will host Somerville at 6:00, while the girls and their new head coach, Ben Jette, will travel to Somerville. The boys will entertain Everett next Thursday, while the girls will make the short trip across the Parkway to meet the Lady Crimson Tide.
Both teams will face their seven GBL rivals twice.
The boys will complete their 20-game schedule with two contests against non-league opponents in the Legends Classic Tournament at Cambridge over the Christmas break and games later in the season against Cambridge Rindge and Latin (which will be played at the TD Garden on January 14), Brighton, East Boston, and Tech Boston.
The girls’ non-league opponents on their 18-game schedule include Excel, Pioneer, Rockport, and Mystic Valley.
