CHS Girls Volleyball Finishes at 16–2, Takes 2nd in GBL

The Chelsea High girls volleyball team concluded its most successful season in the program’s history — as well as one of the most successful seasons of any sport in the annals of CHS athletics — finishing their 2023 campaign with a sterling 16-2 record and claiming undisputed possession of second place in the Greater Boston League (GBL) behind only undefeated Lynn Classical.

First-year head coach Gloria Rodriguez’s Lady Red Devils defeated GBL foe Medford (3-0) and non-league rivals Boston Latin Academy (3-2 and 3-0), New Mission (3-1), and East Boston (3-0) in the past two weeks. Their lone setback during the stretch came at Classical by a 3-0 score.

The Lady Red Devils celebrated Senior Night in an appropriate fashion against Boston Latin Academy this past Tuesday with a 3-0 shutout. The members of the CHS Class of 2024 who were honored and recognized for their contributions to the girls volleyball propragm were Yareliz Gonzalez Falcon, Keiri Hernandez Romero, Emily Rojop Lopez, and Tatiana Sanabria Herrera.

Among the highlights for the Chelsea squad in their recent victories were:

— Angelica Ayala served a game-high eight aces and Treasure Williams delivered eight kills in the win over East Boston;

— Ayala also led the team with five aces in the match with Classical. “Angelica has improved her serve the last couple of matches,” said Rodriguez. “She is now an incredibly  strong server;”

— Ashley Martinez delivered 10 aces and dished out 24 assists in the win over New Mission; and

— Tatiana Sanabria Herrera scored 18 kills in the win over Medford.

Rodriguez and her crew, who punched their ticket for a Journey to the Tourney midway through the season, now await word of their final seeding and first-round opponent in the upcoming Division 2 MIAA state volleyball tournament.

Girls Soccer to Hold Senior Night Monday

The Chelsea High girls soccer team will conclude its season this coming Monday when the Lady Red Devils host Boston International in a contest that will be highlighted by Senior Day festivities.

“Overall, the team is looking forward to celebrating our seniors, Alessandra Campos, Keara Chavez Trejo, Julissa Davila Gonzalez, and Stephanie Martines, in our last game of the season,” said CHS head coach Randy Grajal. “Their hard work and dedication deserves to be celebrated.”

The Lady Red Devils played two games last week against Greater Boston League opponents Revere and Medford and came up short by scores of 6-0 and 7-1 respectively. Senior Keara Chavez Trejo scored her first goal of the season in the Malden game from a well-struck corner kick by senior Alessandra Campos. Keara met the ball in the box and then executed a one-timer that cleanly beat the Malden goalkeeper, delivering the ball into the back of the Malden net.

“Sophomore Natalie Alvarenga has made a lot of progress this year as a goalie,” noted Grajal. “She is more decisive and has developed a voice on the field, which are important qualities in a goalie.”
