MassDOT Schedules Final Bridge Machinery Test at Chelsea Street Bridge

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that it will be conducting the final testing and fine tuning of the new span guide roller machineries on the Chelsea Street Bridge in East Boston and Chelsea. This work is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 19, between the hours of 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. The bridge will remain fully operational during the testing of the new machinery and pedestrian access across the bridge will be maintained at all times. The testing and adjusting of the new span guide roller machinery will occur while the bridge is opening and there will be personnel on the bridge taking measurements during an active lift. Lifts may take 10-15 minutes longer than a normal lift and drivers/pedestrians should allow additional time accordingly during these hours. The testing personnel will be following OSHA safety standards. The public may notice the personnel on the bridge during the lift; personnel present will be in accordance with safety protocols.

Appropriate signage, law enforcement details, and advance message boards will be in place to guide drivers and pedestrians through the work area.

MassDOT encourages drivers to seek alternate routes, reduce speed, and use caution while approaching and traveling through the work zone.

All scheduled work is weather dependent and may be impacted due to an emergency, dates are subject to change.
