CHS Cross-Country Teams Edge English; Girls Remain Undefeated

The Chelsea High boys and girls cross country teams both emerged victorious in close races with Greater Boston League rival Lynn English last Wednesday on their home course at Admiral’s Hill.

The Red Devil boys won their meet by the narrowest of margins, 28-29. The top five finishers for Chelsea were Alex Flores, who topped the field, followed by teammates Jose Amaya in third, Kyle Leong in seventh, Jason Rodrigues in eighth, and Ivan Padilla in ninth.

“This was a big win for the boys,” said CHS head coach Reegan von Wildenradt. “There were lots of personal records, including from seniors Jose Amaya (19:08) and Alex Flores (17:47). Alex even cracked the top-10 course record. His time put him fourth all time for our Admiral’s Hill course.”

On the girls’ side, the Lady Red Devils remained undefeated at 5-0 with a closely-contested 27-30 victory. “This was a close one, but everyone really stepped up and did their job,” said von Wildenradt. “I am so impressed with this group.”

Rosalinda Rojas once again led the way with a first-place finish, followed by Hazel Hatleberg in third, Iyssis Henderson in fifth, Jada Amezquita in sixth, and Aisha Ghelle in 12th.

“A big ‘shout-out’ to Rosalinda Rojas, who continues her unbeaten streak,” said von Wildrenradt. “She’s a remarkable leader and has grown into an incredibly smart, hard-working runner.”

Both teams were scheduled to trek to Medford yesterday (Wednesday) and to return home next Wednesday to host Revere in their dual-meet season finale before the GBL championship meet on October 25.

Four More Wins for CHS Volleyball; Now Stand at 11–1

The Chelsea High girls volleyball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Gloria Rodriguez, chalked up four more victories against Greater Boston League (GBL) opponents this past week to improve their record to a sterling 11-1, leaving them just one game behind first-place and undefeated Lynn Classical in the GBL standings.

Chelsea dispatched Somerville (3-1), Everett (3-0), Malden (3-1), and Revere (3-1) in their four-game skein. Among the highlights for the Chelsea squad noted by Rodriguez were the play of Hazel Martinez, who served 10 aces against Everett, and Yareliz Gonzalez Falcon, who maintained a consistent five blocks through the Somerville and Malden matches.

“Overall, Tatiana Sanabria Herrera stays a strong player for the varsity team,” said Rodriguez. “As of right now, she has a total of 117 kills and 64 aces. Ashley Martinez is also another strong player for the varsity team. She has a total of 57 aces and 242 assists.”

The Lady Red Devils were scheduled to host GBL rival Medford yesterday (Wednesday) and then travel to non-league opponents Boston Latin Academy today (Thursday) and New Mission next Wednesday.

CHS Girls Soccer Continues Working Hard

Although the Chelsea High girls soccer team fell short in its contests last week to Greater Boston League (GBL) foes Somerville and Lynn Classical (two of the top three teams in the GBL) and non-league opponent Excel Academy, coach Randy Grajal’s young crew continues to work hard and show improvement.

Senior Alessandra Campos scored two goals in the three contests, one against Excel and another vs. Somerville to bring her total number of goals for the season to five, to go along with two assists.

“Alessandra is a true leader on the field,” said Grajal. “She works tirelessly throughout the whole game and she has a great attitude toward supporting her teammates.”

Sophomore Kimberly Estrada Mazariegos was named the team’s Athlete of the Week. “Kimberly is a true leader for the defense,” said Grajal. “She displays a positive attitude and works hard the whole game. She is a player who understands the game and is capable of playing different positions.

“We have a very young team this year with 10 freshmen,” added the coach. “We are definitely learning valuable lessons from each game and hopefully we can apply those lessons to future games.”

The Lady Red Devils are scheduled to play at Lynn English today (Thursday) and to host Madison Park tomorrow (Friday). They will make the short treks to Revere next Tuesday and to Malden next Thursday.

CHS Football at Keefe Technical

The Chelsea High football team, which came up short by a score of 20-6 in their contest at Dracut High last week, will be shooting to secure its second victory of the season when coach David Rocque and his crew travel to the Framingham State football field on Maple St. to take on Keefe Technical School tomorrow (Friday) evening. The opening kickoff is set for 7:00.
