Boys soccer team wins two more games

The tournament-bound Chelsea High boys soccer team raised its record to a sterling 9-1-2 mark with a pair of victories this past week over Greater Lowell and Greater Lawrence. The twin wins set up a likely showdown today (Thursday) with Northeast Regional Vocational School for the championship of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference’s Division 1.

In Friday’s win over Greater Lowell, the Red Devils appeared to be in fine shape in the first half with a 2-0 lead, but Greater Lowell bounced back to tie the score with about 15 minutes to play.

However, the Red Devils soon put their well oiled machine back into “Cruz control” thanks to a successful penalty kick by Carlos Cruz, who had two goals on the day. Fellow seniors Omellieo McNeish (who also scored on a PK), Elvin Merino, and Donne Agogo also reached the back of the Greater Lowell net.

“The game was a lot closer than we would have liked,” said CHS assistant coach Evan Protasowicki, “but once Carlos scored on the penalty kick, we were able to break the logjam and score two more quick goals.”

Tuesday’s win over Greater Lawrence was a blowout for which the Record will have more details next week.

After today’s big contest with Northeast, coach Mick Milutinovic’s Red Devils will close out their regular season Friday with a rematch at Greater Lowell. They then will await the announcement next week of the state tournament seedings and first round pairings.
