The City of Chelsea is proud to announce that State Representative Judith Garcia (D-11th Suffolk) presented two longtime Chelsea Disability Commission members Susan Backstrom and Alex Floyd-Vargas official citations from Massachusetts State House of Representatives on Saturday, July 11, during the City’s Disability Pride Month celebration in Chelsea Square. Backstrom and Floyd-Vargas were recognized for their years of advocacy and commitment to creating a more inclusive community.
Garcia said, “Progress doesn’t happen by chance. It happens because people like Susan Backstrom and Alexander Floyd-Vargas keep working, often quietly, to remove barriers and create opportunities for others. Chelsea has been shaped for the better because of their leadership.”
“Susan and Alex are true champions in our community. We should all aspire to be as courageous and as outspoken as they both are. The City of Chelsea couldn’t be more lucky to have them as residents.” said Bernabe Rodriguez, Chelsea’s Director of Constituent Services and Liaison for the Disability Commission.
Residents, families, and visitors of all abilities gathered on July 11 and participated in the City’s second annual Disability Pride Month Celebration. This year’s special community celebration was called “United in Ability – Different Ways, One Community,” and honored inclusion, accessibility, and the many strengths, talents and contributions of individuals of all abilities.
The event featured a variety of activities for all ages, including resource tables, family activities, food and refreshments, and music provided by a live DJ. The event was made possible through the dedication and collaboration of a broad community planning committee.
The event welcomes everyone to come together in celebration of pride, inclusion, and community spirit. Organizers said they look forward to the event growing each year while encouraging year-round awareness, understanding, and support for all abilities.
