Basketball great Steve Karll announces

Stephen Karll, chairperson of the Chelsea High School Class of 1964 Reunion Committee, has announced an 80th birthday celebration for classmates to be held Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, at the Marina at the Wharf restaurant in Revere.

Karll said the reunion committee decided to hold the special event in advance of its next reunion (2029) as many classmates are turning 80 years old this year.

“We just wanted to get together and celebrate this happy milestone in our lives,” said Karll, who turns 80 in August.

Karll, known warmly as “Stevie” to his classmates and friends, is one of Shurtleff School and Chelsea High School’s greatest basketball players. Long before the three-point shot was introduced, Karll was a prolific outside shooter for the Red Devils. His partnership with the late Lewis “Lou” Perkins, the Red Devils’ 6-foot-5-inch center who went on to play at Iowa, is one of the city’s most illustrious backcourt-frontcourt combinations.

Karll himself went on to excel in basketball at Boston State College. Coached by former Boston Celtics star Jim Loscutoff, Karll led the Warriors to a berth in the NAIA Tournament in Kansas.

Following his graduation from Boston State, Karll attended Northeastern University School of Law, following in the footsteps of his father, prominent attorney and former Chelsea city solicitor Morris Karll.

Stephen Karll has had a distinguished career in the field of law and currently serves in the prestigious position of First Assistant Clerk Magistrate in the Massachusetts court system. In 2023, Karll was honored with the UMass Boston Alumni Beacon Award (Boston State merged into the UMass Boston system in 1982).

The Class of 1964 80th Birthday Celebration will begin at noon. There will be a luncheon buffet.

Tickets are $40 per person. For further information, please contact Stephen Karll by email at [email protected].
