Barandao, Tavares earn latest Name, Strength and Story Awards from Chelsea Public Schools

Recognized for their ability to go above and beyond to meet the needs of Chelsea Public Schools students, Nurse Case Manager Anita Barandao and Vision and Hearing Technician Angela Tavares received Name, Strength and Story Awards at the February meeting of the Chelsea School Committee.

Superintendent Dr. Almundena (Almi) G. Abeyta presented the two staff members with awards after receiving a nomination for the two from Chelsea Virtual Learning Academy Principal Meg Maccini. The two received a commendation from Dr. Abeyta and were recognized publicly on Thursday, February 5, at City Hall Chambers.

At the school committee meeting, Dr. Abeyta read from the commendation submitted by Maccini, “Both consistently go above and beyond for CVLA students and families and their dedication deserves recognition.”

The commendation referenced how Anita and Angela work tirelessly to ensure that CVLA students receive their health, vision and hearing screening so that the students’ services are up to date. With CVLA students participating in school virtually, both members of the CPS Health Department work creatively to provide services such as screenings at in-person CVLA events.

One recent example was shared to illustrate the work that both Barandao and Tavares do.

Immediately following the recent snowstorm that left snow and ice in the area, they transported screening equipment to the Chelsea Public Library to screen CVLA students who were taking in-person exams at the library. As a result, 82 percent of CVLA students were screened.
