Residents Celebrate Chelsea Day

Residents celebrated “Chelsea Day” Saturday with a road race that attracted 500 runners, a parade down Broadway, and a special presentation on stage by the Chelsea contingent that brought national recognition to the city by winning the National Civic League’s All-America City Award in June.

In fact, National Civic League Director Rebecca Trout traveled to Chelsea to personally present the award to City Manager Fidel Maltez, City Council President Norielez DeJesus and the team during Saturday’s festivities on Lower Broadway.

“We are so proud that a representative from the All-America City national competition flew all the way from Denver to give us this award,” said Maltez.

Trout commended Chelsea in her remarks, noting, “Chelsea submitted an epic application highlighting several of the projects that you heard about here today. The application review committee was just so impressed with those efforts. What really stood out was the community’s commitment to equity and inclusion, to programs that have  language justice and anti-displacement efforts, as well as the really collaborative partnerships with several of the community partners such as GreenRoots and the school district. The energy in Denver was amazing, and it was special because of the people like you see on the stage in Chelsea today. The jury was just blown away by the spirit of resilience and belonging that you were able to capture here in Chelsea.” With the success of Chelsea Day and the majestic appearance of Rebecca Trout, the community once again showed why it truly is an “All-America City.”
