Herbie Kupersmith, one of Chelsea’s most outstanding philanthropists for many years, presented a $10,000 donation to Supt. of Schools Dr. Almi Abeyta at a luncheon Sunday at the Saul Nechtem Gymnasium.
Supt. Abeyta, City Manager Fidel Maltez, and Councilor-at-Large Leo Robinson thanked Mr. Kupersmith, 86, for his generosity to the Chelsea schools, an era of giving back to the city that spans seven decades.
The occasion was the Herbert Kupersmith Scholarship Luncheon and Birthday Celebration, with a large crowd in attendance, thanks to the efforts of the planning committee that included super-organizer Minna Karas-Marino.
The guest list included family, friends, classmates, teammates, coaches, and associates of Herbie Kupersmith.
Kupersmith and his committee also made sure that each guest left with complimentary bagels and cream cheese from legendary owner Richard Katz of Katz Bakery.
The Chelsea schools security team drew much praise from the guests for their parking assistance, safe passage at the crosswalks, and their kind and cordial escorting of guests into the school.
Overall, it was a wonderful afternoon for the incomparable Williams School and Chelsea High School graduate Herbie Kupersmith and all the guests – and notably, the Chelsea High School students who will receive scholarships next June for their college educations.
