Special to the Record
On June 25, 2025, Representative Judith Garcia honored Keila Velez of Chelsea as a 2025 Commonwealth Heroine during a celebration at the Massachusetts State House. Velez was nominated by Representative Garcia in recognition of her long-standing service and dedication to the Chelsea community.
Keila Velez serves as a pastor at La Luz de Cristo Church and has played an active role in supporting local families and community members through her ministry and community engagement. Her leadership and commitment to service have had a meaningful impact across the city.
The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women (MCSW) partners annually with state legislators to identify and recognize women from each district who make outstanding contributions to their communities. Since it was established in 2004, the Commonwealth Heroines program has honored remarkable women across Massachusetts.
The ceremony at the State House served as a celebration of public service, civic engagement, and local leadership. Pastor Keila Velez was presented with a recognition from the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women and received official legislative citations from Representative Garcia and Senator DiDomenico in honor of her contributions to the Chelsea community.
Representative Garcia spoke to the significance of honoring individuals like Keila Velez through the Commonwealth Heroines program. “Keila’s commitment to her community is a powerful example of everyday leadership,” said Garcia. “Through her tremendous faith and her calling to serve God, she has a unique ability to bring people together. Her work often happens quietly, without seeking recognition, yet its impact runs deep. I’m truly honored to celebrate her contributions through this program.”
In addition to her pastoral work, Velez has remained actively involved in supporting the Chelsea community through various forms of service and engagement. Her work reflects a strong commitment to uplifting others and responding to the needs of local families.
“I am humbled to know and work with Pastor Keila Velez,” said Chelsea City Manager Fidel Maltez. “Over the past two years, Keila worked tirelessly to organize Chelsea’s Peace Vigils with the theme “United for Chelsea”. Keila has been instrumental in relaunching Chelsea’s “Faith & Blue”, a key initiative that partners Chelsea Police Department with houses of worship. Keila has been an incredible conduit for collaboration between our faith community and local governments. But most importantly, Keila leads with love and centers family in her work. We are honored to have such a dedicated member in our community.”
The Commonwealth Heroines are selected for their contributions to civic life, community service, volunteerism, and professional achievement. Honorees are nominated by state legislators to acknowledge their roles as leaders, caregivers, mentors, and advocates.
