CHS Boys Soccer Tops Somerville

The Chelsea High boys soccer team earned its fourth straight victory with a 2-1 win over Greater Boston League rival Somerville last Thursday.

The Highlanders opened the contest with a fast style of play that put a lot of pressure on the Red Devils in the first 20 minutes. However, Chelsea weathered the early storm and soon began to establish a rhythm in the Red Devils’ favor.

The shift in momentum eventually led to the first goal of the game by Red Devil Jose Joj. The go-ahead goal further boosted the Red Devils’ energy level and coach Mick Milutinovic’s squad continued to dominate possession. The Chelsea pressure culminated with a goal by Steven Gamez to give the Red and Black a 2-0 edge at the intermission.

Although Chelsea maintained the same high degree of intensity after the break, Somerville scored from a corner halfway through the second half. The Highlanders continued to put on the pressure in the CHS end for the rest of the game, but the Red Devil defense was able to lock it down to preserve the victory.

However, the Red Devils’ winning streak came to an end earlier this week with back-to-back losses by scores of 2-1 on Monday and Tuesday to East Boston and Everett.

In Monday’s contest with non-league opponent East Boston, Chelsea conceded two goals in the first 15 minutes of the game. However, the Red Devils, who had been creating opportunities on counter-attacks, successfully produced a goal when Joj went one-on-one with the Eastie keeper and tapped the ball into the Jet net to make it 2-1.

However, that would prove to be as close as the Red Devils would get and a scoreless second half produced a 2-1 victory for Eastie.

This past Tuesday the Red Devils hosted archrival Everett at Chelsea Stadium. Although the teams began evenly to start the match, Everett broke the deadlock 15 minutes into the contest. The Crimson Tide added to their lead 10 minutes later to make it 2-0, which is where matters stood until midway through the second half when Esteban Calderon crossed the ball into the box where Joj found himself wide open and scored with a bicycle kick to the top right corner.

Jose’s goal provided some spark for the Red Devils. Chelsea continued to press for the remainder of the game and had multiple opportunities, but the Devils were unable to notch the equalizer.

Milutinovic and his crew, who now stand at 5-5 on the season, are scheduled to travel to Lynn English this evening (Thursday), to Revere on Monday, and to Malden next Thursday.
