CHS boys soccer earns first victory; hosts Revere today
The Chelsea High boys soccer team earned its first victory of the season with a 3-1 triumph over Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Lynn English this past Tuesday at Chelsea Stadium.
Coach Mick Milutinovic’s squad was in control of the contest from the outset. Red Devil captains Christian Palacios and Jose Joj combined to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game when Christian sent a ball over the top to Jose on the left side of the field and Jose swiftly cut in and rocketed the ball into the back of the net.
Although some careless play by the Red Devils allowed English to bring the contest back to level on a counterattack before the intermission, Chelsea reasserted control in the second half after a halftime pep talk from Milutinovic that motivated his team.
The Red Devils broke the deadlock just six minutes into the second half. Joj once again was involved, as the junior captain passed the ball across the edge of the box to Steven Gamez, from where Steven delivered a perfect strike into the back of the Bulldog net.
Ten minutes later, Joj was awarded a penalty and made good on the penalty kick (PK) for the insurance goal.
“Even though we didn’t score again, the team kept control for the rest of the game to secure our first victory of the season in our home opener,” noted CHS assistant coach William Estrada.
Last Thursday, Chelsea dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to GBL archrival Everett before a large and boisterous crowd on the latter’s home field at the 7-Acre Park complex. An Everett PK in the final five minutes proved the difference.
“We did not bring the same intensity as we did in our season-opener against Excel and that’s reflective of the 1-0 loss,” noted Estrada. “Even if we had come out of it with a draw, it still wasn’t a performance we were proud of.”
Milutinovic and his crew, who are 1-2 on the season, are scheduled to host GBL foe Revere today (Thursday) under the lights at Chelsea Stadium starting at 5:45. They will entertain Malden next Tuesday at 5:45 and will travel to Medford next Thursday.
CHS football plays at Lynn English Friday
The Chelsea High football team will be seeking its first victory of the young season when the Red Devils travel to Manning Field to take on Lynn English tomorrow (Friday) evening. The opening kickoff is set for 7:30.
Chelsea, which is 0-2, came up short by a score of 18-0 last week in a contest at Lowell Catholic. The Red Devils will play at Somerville next Friday.
Chelsea cross-country hosts Everett today
The Chelsea High girls and boys cross-country teams opened their seasons this past week with a meet against Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Malden on the Red Devils’ home course at Admiral’s Hill.
The boys came up short by a final score of 22-33.
“Overall, it was a solid start to the season for the boys,” said CHS coach Cesar Hernandez. “Kyle Leong was our top runner on the day, finishing third overall, followed closely by Sherwin Kim in fourth. Eric Anderson (7th), Ivan Irias (9th), and Carlos Perez (10th), rounded out the rest of our scoring.
“For the girls, we were not able to qualify for a win, since we were only running four. Our highlight came from Hazel Hatleberg, who finished first overall with a time of 23:53.”
Hernandez and his crew, who dropped their meet with Somerville this past Monday, were scheduled to host Everett today (Thursday) at Admiral’s Hill and will travel to Lynn Classical next Wednesday.
