•On Friday, Mrs. Hawthorne’s 4th grade OLA class and Mrs. Delvaux’s 2nd grade OLA class met up for their third session of book buddies. they read the story ‘The Invisible Boy’ and then book buddies worked together to retell the story as a comic strip. The class also brainstormed ways to include others. It was another wonderful session of books buddies and we can’t wait for next week.

Kelly School Updates

•Kelly School 6th grade Caminos scholars have been making lots of authentic text-to-text and text-to-world connections this week. As students are learning about the rise of three religions in the Middle East as part of their Ancient History studies, they have noticed in current events that violence has escalated again in the area.  Many students are also interested in what is happening in Afghanistan now because of their connection with having read ‘The Bread Winner’ last year. Yet….they also reflected that we shouldn’t stereotype these parts of the world as violent. Teachers Darby Drafts and Saraé Ramos have been helping them uncover connections that they hope make what we learn in school relevant to real life, as well as help our scholars develop both critical thinking skills and compassion!

•Matt Stout, statehouse bureau reporter for the Boston Globe (and spouse of Kelly School Literacy Coach Alex Stout) joined Kelly School OLA Classes this week to kick off a Kelly School Newspaper (blog). After he explained his job and why it matters to have an independent press reporting, students asked him questions like: “How do you choose what is news? How do you make sure you are reporting true facts? and How do you stay neutral when you have strong feelings about a story? Thanks, Matt and Alex. Students can’t wait to share the stories our student reporters uncover.

Sokolowski School Updates

•On Friday, the school had its first Red Triangle School Meeting since they reopened the building and the school decided to go hybrid. The roomies and zoomies got together to celebrate the red triangle earners and end the week singing a crowd favorite – the Pyramid of Success song.

Chelsea High School Updates

•On Thursday, May 13, CHS Bridge Academy teachers Giulia Basile and Gretchen Barkhuff and their sheltered ELA students welcomed poet and activist Martín Espada for a poetry reading via Zoom. Espada read six poems and answered questions from the students. From the opening introduction by 9th grader Ever García, to the moving and sometimes funny poems read by Espada, and to the appreciative and insightful questions from the students (better questions, Martín said, than he gets from most reporters)–it was an amazing event.

•One class of AP US History students participated and completed  the WE Service Program. They learned about a pantry drive that Monica Elias CHS Alumni has helped work on with St. Luke’s for over a year now. After hearing about how they have expanded the role of what they are providing to families, most of the  students worked together to donate to this worthy cause. As a class they put together over six bags of essential items that will be given to families in Chelsea. After the AP Exam they will explore more about the organizations that have provided relief to families during COVID 19.
