CHS boys soccer opens with 2-0 victory

The Chelsea High boys soccer team opened its season Tuesday with a big 2-0 victory over Northeast Regional, which perennially is the Red Devils’ top foe in the Large School division of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference.

Junior forward Delmer Romero had the honor of scoring Chelsea’s first goal of 2018 with a breakaway midway through the first half thanks to a nice through-ball from defenseman Wilmer Rivera.

“Our defense was pushing the ball forward throughout the game and counterattacking at every opportunity,” said CHS assistant coach Evan Protasowicki. “Wilmer gave Delmer a nice ball and it led to our first goal.”

The 1-0 CHS lead stood up throughout the game thanks to a rock-solid defense and the fine play of junior keeper Oliver Romero, who stepped-up into the starting role because of the absence of senior captain Roberto Portillo.

“Oliver is new to the program this year, but he came through in a big way for us,” noted Protasowicki. “He made some really nice saves, particularly on a Northeast free kick late in the first half.”

Delmer Romero gave the Red Devils some breathing room with his second goal of the contest with about 1:30 to play on another break on the Northeast keeper.

.”Delmer has improved nicely since last year,” noted Protasowicki. “He’s bigger, stronger, and faster and plays much more physically. He was able to run past the Northeast defenders and then use his body on both goals to shield the ball from them.”

Senior defenseman Jose Gutierrez, who plays at one of the center back positions in Chelsea’s four-back defensive scheme, will join Portillo as a captain of coach Mick Milutinovic’s Red Devils for 2018.

With the field at Chelsea Stadium undergoing a major renovation, the Red Devils will be playing their home games this season on the turf at Highland Park, which the CHS squad will be sharing with the CHS girls’ squad as well as the youth soccer programs.

The Red Devils will be back in action today (Thursday), hosting Shawsheen Tech at 4:00. They will travel to Greater Lowell next Thursday.
