The Chelsea High boys basketball team capped off its improbable run to a berth in the state tourney with a 65-64 over Lynn Tech last Wednesday night in the last game of the regular season.
The triumph gave the Red Devils sole possession of second place in the Large Division of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference, which earns an automatic berth in the tourney. Although Chelsea had assured itself of at least a tie for second place with its victory over Shawsheen Tech last Tuesday, Wednesday’s win over Tech means that only the Red Devils will finish in second and go to the tourney, knocking out both Shawsheen and Greater Lowell from possible tourney spots.
Chelsea led all the way against Tech, but could never quite shake their CAC rival. The Devils held a four point lead in the last minute, but a three pointer by Tech at the buzzer accounted for the final margin of one point.
Carlos Vazquez led the Red Devils with 18 points.
“We were a bit tired because it was the end of a stretch of three games in three nights for us,” said CHS head coach Jay Seigal. “But we played well enough to hang on for the win.”
Seigal and his crew started the season 0-6, but finished the year with an 8-12 mark and were 6-4 in the CAC Large. They earned their first victory with the upset of the season over an undefeated Whittier team that is the CAC Large champion.
The Red Devils now await the news, which is expected tomorrow (Friday), of their first round opponent in the upcoming Division 2 North Sectional of the state tournament.
