Red Devils Host Matignon on Turkey Day

The Chelsea High football team will host Matignon Thanksgiving Day at Chelsea Stadium.

Thanksgiving Day football always is special for high school players and fans alike and that certainly will be the case when the Red Devils take to the CHS gridiron Thursday morning.

Although the Red Devils have just one win to their credit in their 2012 campaign, a victory on Turkey Day marks a season unto itself, bringing a happy conclusion to their schoolboy playing days for the seniors and a hint of better things to come for the underclassmen.

That win, an impressive 36-8 triumph at Mystic Valley, showed the potential that the Red Devils hope to unleash against Matignon. In that contest, senior  running back Raul Flores had a great night on offense, rushing for 170 yards on 19 carries and scoring three touchdowns, including a 40 yard jaunt into the endzone in the second period.

Other key offensive performers for the Red Devils this season have been sophomore running backs Kalvin Duran and Sammy Rivera and senior captain and center David Roque, who anchors a young CHS offensive line for CHS head coach Mike Stellato.

The contest figures to be an evenly-matched affair. The Red Devils are 1-8 and Matignon, which plays in the small division of the Central Catholic League, is 2-8. Although Chelsea and Matignon have had no common opponents this season, an analysis of some once-removed foes shows that the teams may be on an equal footing when they face off Thursday morning. For example, Greater Lawrence defeated Chelsea, 41-6, and Pope John High, 49-22. Pope John in turn shut out Matignon, 22-0.

Kick off time is 10:00 a.m.
