Baseball Team Wins Two, Improves to 4-3

The Chelsea High baseball team racked up a pair of victories this past week to improve to 4-3 overall on the season and 3-0 in the Small Division of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference.

Coach Alan Beausoleil’s Red Devils parlayed a pair of fine pitching performances and some heavy lumber at the plate in the triumphs over Pope John High last Friday and Minuteman Regional on Monday.

Jose Pineda went all seven innings against PJHS, scattering nine hits and fanning 11 enemy batters. After a shaky first frame in which Jose walked the first two hitters and yielded a three run homer, he settled down and took control the rest of the way.

His teammates soon erased the early deficit, breaking open a 4-4 contest in the fifth with a barrage of hits and runs. Leading the way in the offensive department were Daniel Velastegui with two hits, three runs scored, and two RBI; Luis Encarnacion with three hits (two of which were doubles), three runs, and two RBI; and Adonys Urbaez with a pair of two baggers and four RBI.

In the 9-4 triumph over Minuteman, Odanys Urbaez turned in another complete Red Devil game on the mound to pick up the victory. Odanys yielded 10 hits, but all of the damage by Minuteman occurred in the sixth frame with Chelsea holding a comfortable 8-0 advantage. Urbaez whiffed seven opponents, including the final two outs of the game to finish with a flourish.

Lead off Red Devil Luis Diaz was a thorn in Minuteman’s side all day with two hits and three runs scored. Adonys Urbaez helped out his twin brother by contributing three runs and two stolen bases.

Previously the Red Devils earned a big win with a close 4-3 triumph over Northeast Regional Vocational High School. Eli Ortiz went four innings and Pineda finished the final three frames to lead Chelsea to the victory.

Beausoleil and his crew have a busy week ahead. They travel to Greater Lowell today (Thursday) and then return home for a stretch in which they host PJ tomorrow; North Shore on Monday; Greater Lawrence on Wednesday; and Lynn Tech next Friday.
