The Chelsea High boys track team won its first two meets of the season, defeating Lynn Tech 105-31, and Northeast Regional Vocational School, 88-48.
Senior captain Santos Hernandez led the way in both meets, capturing the 400 meter low hurdles and the 110 meter high hurdles against both opponents. Santos also took second place in the triple jump in both meets to put 13 points on the CHS side of the score sheet.
Senior Captain Nobert Simon also put up a lot of points for the Red Devils in both meets. Nobert won the high jump and took seconds in the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and the long jump against Lynn Tech. In the Northeast meet, he won the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and tied with teammate Luis Hernandez in the long jump for first place.
Joseph Arroyo won the mile going away in both meets, while Brandon Rath did likewise in the 400 meter dash, including a personal record (PR) in the Northeast race. Francisco Colindres won the 800 meters against both his Lynn and Northeast rivals. Similarly, Rony Gomez was first in the discus in both meets.
The Red Devils quartet of Calvin Hernandez, Joseph Arroyo, Edgar Ocana and Brandon Rath captured the 4 x 400 relay.
Other point scorers for Chelsea in the Lynn Tech meet were: Adam Umarov with a second in the 400 hurdles and third in the 110 meter high hurdles; the two mile was swept by Chelsea, led by Edgar Ocana who was followed by Hector Mendoza and Tyler Potter; Yehya Nur was second in the mile followed by senior Roger Andrade (who is BU bound); Jorge Ramos took second in the 400 and Michael Rendon was third; Brian Pliego was second and Chester Rath was third in the 800; Troy Crossley was third in the 100 meter dash, the 200 meters, and long jump and finished second in the high jump; senior Walter Cortez was the winner in the boy’s javelin followed by Pliego in second and Anthony Carrasquilla in third; Christian Ortega was first in the shot put, followed by Andy Rath and Juan Achar; Carrasquilla took third in the discus; and Kevin Luu was third in the triple jump.
In the Northeast meet, Red Devils who contributed to the victory included: Yehya Nur with a third in the mile; Luis Hernandez with a second in the 400; Brian Pliego and Chester Rath with a second and third in the 800; Juan Achar and Walter Cortez who were second and third in the discus; Edgar Ocana and Hector Mendoza finished second and third for Chelsea in the two mile; Troy Crossley with a second in the 100 meter dash, second in the long jump, and third in the 200 meters; Walter Cortez with a second in the javelin with a PR throw and Pliego with a third in that event, also with a PR; Christian Ortega with a second in the shotput and Andy Rath was third with a PR; and Kevin Luu in the triple jump.
“We have had a good first month of training,” said CHS coach Don Fay. “It’s important to find events for the newcomers so that they feel like a part of the team. I’m looking forward to a good vacation week and looking for improvements in all aspects of our team by the time we face Greater Lawrence.”
The Red Devils will travel to Greater Lawrence on Monday.
