Chelsea High track star Thania Simon captured the Division 4 state championship in the triple jump this past weekend at Bridgewater State University.
Thania’s winning leap of 36’-11.75” was four inches further than the second-place finisher and placed her sixth-best among the six divisions in the state. Simon now will advance to the upcoming Tournament of Champions that will bring together the top 20 or so competitors across the MIAA’s six divisions.
Thania also brought home a fifth-place medal in the long jump with a leap of 17’-5.25”.
Teammate Lilly Serrano earned a medal with a third-place finish in the 200 dash with a time of 25.14. Serrano also competed in the 400 dash (13th place in 58.85) and in the high jump (10th place with a leap of 4’-10”).
Lady Red Devil Hazel Hatleberg competed in the javelin, finishing in 19th place with a throw of 71’-4”.
The Chelsea girls finished with 20 points on the day, which placed them 16th in the team standings among the 35 teams that scored points.
On the boys’ side, Kevin Romero-Molina just missed the medal podium with a ninth-place finish in the discus with a spin of 132’-1”.
Teammate Leeandro Castro finished in 16th place in the 400 hurdles with a clocking of 62.35 and Xavier Guzman came across the line in 23rd place in the 400 dash with a time of 54.49.
