Leeandro  Castro, Kevin Romero-Molina win GBL titles; CHS boys finish  in fourth place

Leeandro Castro and Kevin Romero-Molina claimed Greater Boston League (GBL)  titles at last week’s GBL championship meet that was held at Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere.

Leeandro took first place in the 400m intermediate hurdles with a clocking of 1:02.51. He also took fourth place in the 110m high hurdles and ran a leg of the sixth place 4 x 100 relay team to bring home three medals and finish with 14.25 points on the day.

Romero-Molina was a double-medal winner for the Red Devils. Kevin won the discus with a throw of 133’-8” and took third place in the shot-put to score a team-high 16 points for the Chelsea column on the scoresheet.

Additional point-scorers for the Red Devils were:

— David Ponce with a sixth place ribbon in the 200m dash;

— Xavier Guzman with a third place in the 400 dash;

— Bryan Amaya-Yanes with a sixth in the 800;

— Carlos Perez-Acosta with a fifth in the 1-mile;

— Philip Robles grabbed third place in the discus;

— Gregory Ulloa earned a fifth-place medal in the triple jump and a sixth-place medal in the long jump;

— Aiden Rivas-Ortega took sixth in the triple jump;

— The 4 x 100 relay quartet of David Ponce, Xavir Guzman, Leeandro Castro, and Gregory Ulloa took sixth place; and

— The 4 x 400 team of Bryan Amaya-Yanes, Zakaria Moubtassim, Steven Artica, and Frantzy Genisca grabbed fifth place.

The Chelsea boys finished in fourth place in the team standings among the eight GBL schools with 53 points behind champion Somerville (137 points), Revere (124), and Everett (65).

Thania Simon wins two titles at GBL Meet

Chelsea High girls track and field sensation Thania Simon was the undisputed star of the Greater Boston League (GBL) Championship Meet that was held last week at Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere.

Thania won two individual titles, the high jump with a leap of 17’-1.5” and the triple jump with a distance of 35’-5” (which was almost four feet longer than her nearest rival). Simon also grabbed a third-place in the 200m dash to finish with 26 points on the day, the most by any girl at the meet.

Teammate Lilly Serrano scored 22 points with a first place in the 400m dash in 59.75 (which was more than five seconds faster than the second-place girl), a third in the 100m dash, and a third in the high jump.

Hazel Hatleberg also was a GBL champion, winning the javelin with a throw of 79’-1”, a toss that was almost five feet further than her closest competitor.

Additional point-scorers for the Lady Red Devils were:

— Aly Perez took third place in the 2-mile run;

— Kimberly Fuentes Chavez grabbed a sixth-place medal in the 800;

— The 4 x 400 relay quartet of Hazel Hatleberg, Kimberly Fuentes Chavez, Lawa Drammeh, and Aly Perez brought home a fourth-place medal;

— Lawah Drammeh finished fifth in the triple jump;

— Dieunie Cademus earned fifth-place medals in both the shot-put and the discus; and

— Aria Green won a sixth-place ribbon in the discus.

The Chelsea girls finished in fifth place in the team standings with 76 points, just behind third-place Malden with 82 points and fourth-place Medford with 81 points. Somerville won the meet with 109 points with Revere in second place with 98 points.
