Simon shines for CHS girls outdoor track

Chelsea High track star Thania Simon once again turned in a stellar performance for the Lady Red Devils in their tri-meet last Tuesday with Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals Somerville and Lynn English in which the Lady Red Devils defeated English, 72-49, but came up on the short end of a close 67-60 outcome with Somerville.

Thania scored 18 points against both opponents, taking first-place in three events, the 200 dash with a sprint of 27.2, the long jump with a leap of 17’-3.75”, and the triple jump with a final landing of 36’-5”, and a second-place in the 100 dash.

Dieunie Cademus defeated the field of competition in the shot-put with a throw of 27’-6” and took third vs. English in the discus.

Aria Green won the discus vs. all competitors with a toss of 68’-8.5” and placed third vs. both rivals in the shot-put.

Hazel Hatleberg was a contributor in two events, winning the javelin with a meet-best throw of 76’-11” and finishing second vs. English and third vs. Somerville in the 1-mile.

Lilly Serrano earned three first-place finishes vs. both Somerville and Lynn English with victories in the 100 dash, the 400 dash, and the high jump, and finished third vs. both opponents in the javelin to score 16 points vs. each opponent.

Additional point-scorers for Chelsea were:

— Aly Perez finished first vs. English and second vs. Somerville in the 2-mile;

— Harmony Rogers finished third vs. both opponents in the shot-put;

— Jennifer Ramirez Mejia finished second vs. English and third vs Somerville in the diascues.

— Sophomore Kimberly Fuentes Chavez finished first vs. Somerville and second vs. English in the 800.

— Lawa Drammeh took a second vs. English and a third vs. Somerville In the 200;

The Lady Red Devils, who stand at 3-2 on the season, were scheduled to conclude their dual-meet season this past Tuesday with a tri-meet vs. Lynn Classical and Malden.

The GBL Meet is scheduled this Monday, May 11.

Boys split tri-meet

The Chelsea High boys outdoor track and field team split their tri-meet last week with GBL foes Somerville and Lynn English, falling to the former by a score of 90-42, but defeating the latter, 70-48.

The top performers for the Red Devils were Xavier Guzman, who topped the field in the 400 dash with a clocking of 54.5; Leeandro Castro, who took first vs. both opponents in the 400 hurdles in a time of 62.1;  Kevin Romero-Molina, who defeated the field in the discus with a throw of 118’-11”; and the 4 x 400 relay quartet of Castro, Bryan Amaya-Yanes, Carlos Perez-Acosta, and Guzman, who nipped Somerville for first place by just 0.1 of a second in a time of 3:50.6

Additional point scorers for Chelsea came in these events:

— In the 100 dash, Gregory Ulloa took first-place vs. Somerville and second vs. English;

— In the 200 dash, David Ponce finished second vs. English and third vs. Somerville;

— In the 400 dash, Zakaria Moubtassim finished second vs. English;

— In the 800, Bryan Amaya-Yanes came in second vs. Somerville and third vs. English and teammate Alhagi Drammeh grabbed third vs. Somerville;

— In the 1-mile, Carlos Perez-Acosta finished first vs. English and second vs. Somerville;

— In the 2-mile, Jeffriso Mercado took second vs. English and third vs. Somerville;

— In the shot-put, Kevin Romero-Molina took second vs. Somerville and led a CHS sweep with teammates Nathan Pleitez (tirds vs. Somerville) and Philip Robles vs. English;

— In the discus, Robles took second vs. both Somerville and English and Pleitez grabbed third vs. English;

— In the javelin, Igor Oliviera, Moubtrassim, and Christian Gutierrez swept English;

— In the long jump, Aiden Rivas-Ortega scored a third-place point vs. English; and — In the triple jump, Ulloa finished second vs. English and third vs. Somerville and Rivas-Ortega took third vs. English.
