CHS football earns 11-6 win

The Chelsea High football team posted its second win of the season with an 11-6 triumph over Roxbury Prep last Friday evening under the lights at Chelsea Stadium.

The Red Devils, who have this week off, will travel to Malden next Thursday evening (October 16).

Three wins for CHS boys soccer; meet Revere Tuesday

The Chelsea High boys soccer team enjoyed a perfect week with a trio of victories that stretched the Red Devils’ winning streak to five in a row.

Coach Mick Milutinovic’s crew opened the week by easily handling non-league opponent Cristo Rey last Monday (Sept. 29), 7-0. The Red Devils scored early often with two goals by captain Joe Joj and single tallies by Cristian Lopez and Jorge Sanabria in the opening 20 minutes. Erick Herrera added another before the half for a 5-0 lead, giving Milutinovic a chance to rest his starters for the next day’s game with Lynn Classical.

Senior Gustavo Ramirez added two goals after the intermission for the 7-0 finale.

The Red Devils then traveled to Manning Field in Lynn and defeated Greater Boston League (GBL) rival Lynn Classical last Tuesday, 4-1. Chelsea got off to another fast start. Lopez and Sanabria combined to score the first goal on which a low cross from Lopez allowed Sanabria the chance to just tap the ball into the back of the net.

Lopez then scored again to take the game to 2-0, but Chelsea gave away a penalty to allow Classical to cut the lead in half before the intermission. Although Lopez scored early in the second half to make it 3-1, “It was a very physical game and it always felt as though Classical could score at any moment and change the momentum of the game,” said CHS assistant coach William Estrada.

However, junior Angel Umanzor scored his first goal of the season to give the Red Devils some breathing room  for the 4-1 finale.

Last Thursday, Chelsea trekked to Dilboy Field and knocked off Somerville (which two days earlier had handed undefeated Revere its first loss of the season), 2-0. About 20 minutes into the second half, Chelsea won a free kick on the right hand side. Lopez appeared ready to take the kick, but he called over Erick Herrera, granting him the chance to take it.

The move paid off as Herrera curled a shot around the wall into the top left corner of the net to make it 1-0.

Chelsea’s second goal came from a Lopez corner late in the second half that Jorge Perez deflected with his knee into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Throughout the game, CHS keeper Michael Pomar Camacho made some incredible saves to not only keep his clean sheet for this game, but making it five games in a row without conceding a goal from open play, only conceding the PK against Classical during that span.

The Red Devils now stand at 7-2-1 overall on the season and are in second place in the GBL with a 5-2-1 mark. They were scheduled to travel to Everett this past Tuesday and will entertain Lynn English this afternoon (Thursday). They then will host first-place Revere next Tuesday and Malden next Thursday.

Two more wins for CHS girls soccer

The Chelsea High girls soccer team earned a pair of victories this past week.

Last Monday, coach Randy Grajal and his crew earned an impressive 3–0 victory over Cathedral High, highlighted by a hat trick from junior captain Yahira Jovel-Rivas.

Yahira opened the scoring in the 27th minute, finishing calmly after a nice pass from Edlyn Hernandez Enriquez.

Jovel-Rivas struck again in the 42nd minute when Britney Castellanos Ochoa sent in a cross that she buried with a precise shot to the right of the keeper. Yahira completed her hat trick later in the match after Andrea Andino Galeano broke free on the right side and delivered a perfect cross down the middle, which Jovel-Rivas converted with a strong finish to the left of the goalie.

“We played with confidence, composure, and teamwork throughout the match,” said Grajal. “This performance marks a strong step forward and sets the tone for many more exciting games ahead this season.”

The following day, the Lady Red Devils proved their coach to be prescient when they earned a thrilling 4–3 victory over Lynn Classical. Chelsea once again was led by captain Yahira Jovel-Rivas, who recorded her second consecutive hat trick in as many days.

Jovel-Rivas wasted no time in getting down to business, netting her first tally in the 3rd minute after a perfectly-placed pass from Edlyn Hernandez Enriquez. Chelsea extended its lead in the 20th minute when Hernandez Enriquez herself found the back of the Lady Ram net, finishing off  a perfect through-pass from Emili Rodriguez Rodriguez.

In the second half, Jovel-Rivas showed her speed and determination with a 60-yard run, turning a clearance from Anto Rodriguez Rodriguez into a breakaway counterattack and calmly finishing in a 1-vs-1 with the Lady Ram keeper. Lynn Classical shortened the lead when the Lady Rams scored a goal of their own, but minutes later, Jovel-Rivas completed her hat trick on another well-placed ball from Emili Rodriguez Rodriguez, who tallied her second assist of the match.

The Lady Rams fought back with two late goals, putting Chelsea under pressure in the final stretch. But the Lady Red Devils held firm, defending with grit and teamwork to secure the 4–3 win at the final whistle.

“This victory showcased our resilience, teamwork, and relentless effort, proving once again the Lady Red Devils’ ability to rise to the moment,” said Grajal.

Chelsea did not have much luck last Thursday, coming up on the short end of a 7-0 decision to Somerville in a tough matchup.

Somerville struck early and often in the first half, capitalizing on several long-distance shots to build a 5–0 lead at halftime.

Despite the difficult start, Chelsea regrouped in the second half with a much stronger defensive performance. The Red Devils tightened their shape, battled for every ball, and limited Somerville’s chances, keeping the Lady Highlanders uncomfortable and preventing additional long-range strikes.

“Although the final score did not go our way, the team’s effort and resilience in the second half stood out,” said Grajal. “The match provided valuable lessons and highlighted areas for improvement that the team will continue to build on in training and in future games.”

Grajal and his crew, who stand at 4-5-1 on the season, were scheduled to meet Everett this past Tuesday and then will travel to Lynn English today (Thursday), to Revere next Tuesday, and to Malden next Thursday.

Boys cross country defeats Classical

The Chelsea High boys cross country team improved to 2-2 on the season with a 15-40 victory over Lynn Classical last Wednesday on the Red Devils’ home course at Admiral’s Hill.

Several of coach Cesar Hernandez’s crew achieved personal records for a 5K, led by Xavier Guzman, who improved his best 5K time by breaking 20 minutes by over 30 seconds for the first time. Sebastian Molina also had his best meet ever, improving his season-best 5K time by about a minute.

The top Red Devil boys were:

Xavier  Guzman — 2nd place, 19:29

Carlos Perez — 3rd, 20:07

Zakaria Moubtassim — 4th, 20:23

Sebastian  Molina Regil — 6th, 20:52

Jeffriso Mercado — 7th, 21:22

Bryan Amaya — 8th, 21:57

“Two of our top runners have also been dealing with minor injuries, so we’re hoping the team will look even stronger once those are taken care of,” said Hernandez.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Red Devils came up short by the narrowest of margins, 27-28. Hazel Hatleberg crossed the line in second place in a time of 24:03.

“However, three of our five girls were doing their first 5K ever, and we felt good about being able to make the meet as close as we were able to,” noted Hernandez.

Hernandez’s crew, who took on Lynn English yesterday (Wednesday), will travel down the Parkway to Medford next Wednesday.
