CHS girls soccer defeats English, deadlocks Revere

The Chelsea High girls soccer team earned a win and a tie in a pair of contests against Greater Boston League (GBL) rivals last week.

The Lady Red Devils hosted their first home game of the season last Tuesday against Lynn English and came away with a strong 2–0 victory.

Sophomore Emili Rodriguez Rodriguez opened the scoring with a well-placed finish, assisted by junior captain Yahira Jovel. The second goal came from Anto Rodriguez Rodriguez, who delivered a precise shot to the left side of the keeper after a setup from her sister Emili.

“Our second goal gave the team confidence and control,” said CHS head coach Randy Grajal. “We played an organized, disciplined match, maintaining possession and dictating the pace of play throughout. Our ability to control the ball and tempo translated directly to the scoreboard, sealing the 2–0 win at the final whistle.”

Grajal and his crew then hosted Revere this past Friday and engaged in a fiercely-contested match that ended in a 1–1 draw.

After a scoreless first half, Chelsea came out pressing for the win, but Revere struck early in the second half with a dangerous breakaway. Goalkeeper Katherine Benitez made the crucial 1-on-1 save to keep the match level, but was forced to leave the game after a hard collision.

Stepping in from the bench, Briana Campos rose to the occasion with multiple key saves to keep Chelsea in the game.

Chelsea pushed forward with several scoring chances. Yahira Jovel’s strike from the edge of the box rattled off the post, while Anto Rodriguez was denied on a breakaway by a last-ditch defensive tackle. Another opportunity came when Emili Rodriguez Rodriguez delivered a cross that found Jovel, whose shot went just wide.

With three minutes left, Chelsea finally broke through. Emili slipped a through ball to Jovel, who used her speed to burst past the defense and goalkeeper, finishing calmly to give Chelsea the lead. However, in the final minute, a penalty was awarded to Revere, and they converted the PK to equalize, ending the match at 1–1.

“Despite the tough finish, we showed tremendous heart, battling through adversity and stepping up for one another throughout the game,” said Grajal. “I am super proud of the way the team is playing for each other and how they are supporting one another throughout the game and practices.”

Grajal and his crew, who stand at 2-2-1 on the season, have a busy stretch this week. They took on Malden this past Tuesday and will travel to Medford today (Thursday). They will host non-league foe Cathedral on Monday at the Stadium at 3:30, Lynn Classical next Tuesday at 4:15, and Somerville next Thursday at 4:15.
