The Chelsea High football team, which broke into the win column with a 14-8 victory over Lowell Catholic last Friday evening under the lights at Chelsea Stadium, will journey to Carver tomorrow (Friday) evening. The opening kickoff is set for 6:00.
Leeandro Castro scored both of the Red Devil touchdowns in the win over Lowell Catholic. Jeffrey Ramirez converted both PATs.
CHS boys soccer tops Excel
The Chelsea High boys soccer team is off to a nice start to its 2025 season with two victories in its first three matches.
Coach Mick Milutinovic’s squad, which is led by senior captains Jose Joj and Cristian Lopez, opened the 2025 campaign with a 2-0 victory over non-league opponent Excel Academy, a team that has proven troublesome for the Red Devils in the past few years.
However, goals by senior Joj and Brouk Ephrem turned the tables in Chelsea’s favor in this year’s matchup with the Wolves.
“Our game against Excel was chaotic,” noted CHS assistant coach William Estrada. “We had most of the early opportunities, including a penalty kick halfway through the second half. However, it was not our day. It felt like all of our shots were blocked, deflected, or just simply went wide. It being the first game of the season must’ve had something to do to it. After Jose Joj’s penalty was saved, we couldn’t believe our luck (or lack thereof). With all of the chances that we were creating, we could have scored at least three goals.”
The Red Devils finally reached the back of the Excel net when, after stopping an Excel attack, Stiven Osegura cleared the ball with so much force that it found Joj downfield just outside the Excel penalty area. Jose made a move to the keeper’s left and then squared the ball into the opposite corner of the net.
The Wolves found their footing in the second half, and both teams took turns creating chances. Early in the second half Chelsea had three corner kicks in quick succession. The third was sent in by Joao Pereira Nozar and Brouk Ephrem did well to head the ball. An Excel defender blocked the header, but Brouk was ready for when the ball landed at his feet, where he easily scored off the rebound.
“Our energy remained high throughout the game,” noted Estrada. “We had many chances, all of which failed to find the back of the net. We did not play our best, that’s for sure, but it’s nice to start the season with a win, especially against a team that beat us in our first game last year.”
The Red Devils opened their Greater Boston League (GBL) season last Tuesday against Somerville and fell short by a 1-0 decision
“Our encounter versus Somerville continued to be a cagey affair like the Excel game,” said Estrada. “Chances were being created by both sides, but nothing went in. It went on like this for the whole game. Both teams were getting unlucky with all of the chances that were being missed (or, depending on how you look at it, both teams were lucky not to concede those chances).
“Unfortunately, with only seconds left to go, Somerville sent a ball over the top to their striker, who outpaced our two defenders to score the only goal of the game,” Estrada said. “We had enough time for one attack, but unfortunately we could not tie up the game.”
However, the Red Devils bounced back for a big 3-1 win over Everett last Thursday. “After two games where we felt like we outclassed the opposing teams, we had to step it up,” Estrada said.
Five minutes into the game on an Everett attack, Stiven Osegura won the ball back in the Chelsea penalty box. After a couple of quick passes, Joao Pereira Nozar found himself in midfield and sent the third and final pass to Joj, who saw the Everett keeper off his line and easily shot the ball around him to make it 1-0.
Just 10 minutes later, captains Lopez and Joj worked together to take the ball from an Everett player. Lopez, still deep inside Chelsea’s own half, sent the ball over the top to Joj, who easily secured the ball, dribbled past the keeper at the edge of the box, and shot it into an open net to make it 2-0.
With 10 minutes to go in the half, Everett cut the lead in half with a goal from a free kick after sending the ball in and scoring.
Not even two minutes later, Everett won another free kick. However, this time the Red Devils were able to intercept the cross and send it up to Joj, who was in the center circle. Returning the favor to his fellow captain, Jose delivered a nice pass to Lopez, who beat a couple of defenders before smashing the ball past the Everett keeper for a 3-1 lead before the intermission.
“The second half wasn’t eventful, but the way that we were playing, the victory was never in doubt,” said Estrada.
Chelsea was scheduled to play at Lynn English this past Tuesday and will make the short trip down Broadway to face defending GBL champ Revere today (Thursday). They will travel to Malden next Tuesday and return home to entertain Medford next Thursday.
CHS boys cross country defeats Revere; Hatleberg paces girls
The Chelsea boys cross country team opened its season with a 19-40 victory over Revere last Wednesday on the Red Devils’ home course at Admiral’s Hill.
Junior Carlos Perez won the race with an outstanding performance of 18:41, which was more than a minute faster than Carlos’s best 5K time from last season. Xavier Guzman finished in third place with a clocking of 20:28, followed by Bryan Amaya (20:47), Zakaria Moubtassim (21:24), and Jeffriso Mercado (21:49).
“Aside from two boys, our team is all new to cross country, so we were pretty happy with how the season started for us,” said CHS head coach Cesar Hernandez.
On the girls’ side, although Chelsea only had three girls run (so the Lady Red Devils lost by default), Hazel Hatleberg ran a 23:10 for second place overall, marking the third-fastest 5K Hazel ever has run, showing a strong start to her season.
Aly Perez finished fourth overall in 25:43, more than two minutes faster than her best time last season. Denisse Lara, one of the team’s newcomers, finished eighth overall for the Lady Red Devils.
Hernandez and his crew were scheduled to host Somerville yesterday (Wednesday) and will run at Everett next Wednesday.
CHS girls soccer plays well in close contests
Although the Chelsea High girls soccer team came up on the short end of its matches this past week, coach Randy Grajal was pleased with his team’s overall performance.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Red Devils traveled to Somerville and fell by a score of 4-0.
“Somerville surprised us with a goal in the first minute, and while we worked hard to respond, their defense stood strong,” said Grajal. “Their other three goals came from corner kicks, which is an area we’ll be focusing on improving in the next few practices and games.”
Last Thursday evening the Chelsea girls made the short trip across the Parkway to Everett Stadium and dropped a closely-fought contest, 1-0.
“The team fought the entire game and created chances to score, but we couldn’t quite finish,” noted Grajal. “The crowd was loud and created a great game environment for both teams under the lights.
“Overall, I’m proud of how we competed this week. Our team chemistry continues to grow each day, and our captains are doing a great job keeping everyone engaged and focused,” Grajal added.
The Lady Red Devils were scheduled to meet Lynn English this past Tuesday and to entertain Revere today (Thursday) and Malden next Tuesday. They will play at Medford next Thursday.
