CHS girls soccer opens season with 3-1 victory
The Chelsea High girls soccer team kicked off its 2025 season in superb fashion with a 3-1 victory at Excel Academy in East Boston last Thursday.
The contest was a hard-fought battle from the outset, with the momentum shifting throughout the game. The first half saw back-and-forth play until junior Yahira Jovel broke through with the opening goal, assisted by freshman Edlyn Hernandez-Enriquez, just five minutes before halftime, to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second half, Hernandez-Enriquez dribbled into the box and was fouled, earning a penalty kick. She converted the PK from the spot to double the Chelsea lead. Excel responded with a penalty kick of their own after a foul on the right side of the box, cutting the Chelsea margin to one.
But with 15 minutes left in the game, freshman defender Karla Valle Salmeron sparked a counterattack, finding Hernandez-Enriquez, who sprinted nearly 50 yards before finishing one-on-one with a clinical strike to the left side of the Excel goalkeeper.
The Lady Red Devils held strong the rest of the way, securing a hard-fought 3–1 victory on the road.
“Overall, the team had a strong showing in this game and we’ll continue working to improve our chemistry and game understanding,” said CHS head coach Randy Grajal.
The Lady Red Devils were scheduled to play at Somerville this past Tuesday and will make the short trek across the Parkway to meet Everett this evening (Thursday) for a contest under the lights at Everett Stadium at 6:30.
They will host Lynn English for their first home game next Tuesday afternoon at 4:15 on the turf at Chelsea Stadium and then entertain Revere next Thursday.
