Ariel Chacon-Aracena wins D-4 State crown in the shot-put

Chelsea High’s Ariel Chacon-Aracena brought home a state championship in this past weekend’s MIAA Division 4 track and field meet that was held at Merrimack College in No. Andover.

Ariel’s massive winning throw of 55’-6.5” was almost three feet further than that of the second-place contestant (52’-9.75”), a margin of victory seldomly seen in state-level competition.

Chacon-Aracena also earned a sixth-place medal in the shot-put with a toss of 144’-3”.

Three members of the girls’ team earned medals. Sophomore Lilly Serrano was a double-medalist, winning a seventh place award in the 400 dash with a time of 1:00.63 and an eighth-place ribbon in the 100 dash with a sprint of 12.79.

Kiara Ramirez-Villata brought home a fifth-place medal in the shot-put with a throw of 34’-0.50”. Kiara also turned in a strong showing in the discus with an 11th-place finish with a spin of 85’-9”.

Sophomore Thania Simon qualified for the meet in three events, bringing home a medal in the triple jump with a landing of 35’-5”. Thania finished in 13th place in the 100 dash in 13.01 and in 18th spot in the 200 with a time of 27.31.

Red Devils who also qualified for the meet and who turned in fine showings included Kevin Romero-Molina with a 14th place in the discus; Leeandro Castro with a 19th place in the 400 hurdles; Xavy Guzman with a 27th place in the 400 dash; and Adonis Alvarez-Umana with a 17th place in the shot.

The 4 x 400 quartet of Sherwin Kim, Bryan Amaya-Yanes, Castro, and Guzman came across the line in 14th place with a superb performance of 3:45.49.
