CHS girls, boys track turned in a strong showing at the GBL Meet
Both the Chelsea High girls and boys outdoor track and field teams turned in strong individual and team performances at last Monday’s GBL Championship Meet that was held at Somerville’s Dilboy Stadium.
The girls’ squad finished in third place with 85 points behind Revere (157 points) and Medford (108 points), while the boys tied for fourth place with Everett with 65 points behind Somerville (111 points), Medford (101 points), and Revere (94 points).
The Lady Red Devils were led by sophomore Thania Simon, who was the top point-scorer for the meet (both boys and girls) with 30 points. Thania won three events, the 200 dash (26.47), the long jump (17’-1”), and the triple jump (34’-3”).
Fellow sophomore Lilly Serrano tallied 23.5 points to finish among the top four point-scorers. Lily was the GBL champ in the 400 dash with a time of 1:02.44; took second in the 100 dash with a sprint of 12.66 that was just 0.04 behind the first-place finisher; and tied for third in the high jump.
Senior Kiara Ramirez-Villata was a double-champion. Kiara won the shot-put with a toss of 34’-7”, which was two feet further than her nearest opponent, and the discus with a spin of 99’-9.5”, which was an impressive six feet further than her closest rival.
Additional individual point-scorers for the Lady Red Devils included:
— Hazel Hatleberg scored five points with a fourth-place performance in the mile and added another point with an eighth-place finish in the triple jump;
— Aly Perez won a medal for her eighth-place finish in the two-mile;
— Lauren Nadow won a medal with an eighth-place in the 100 hurdles,
— Anjely Mejia-Martinez earned sixth-place medals in both the shot-put and the discus;
— Dieunie Cademus brought home a fifth-place medal in the discus and a seventh-place medal in the shot; and
— Leanny Sanchez Ynoa took a seventh-place medal in the long jump.
In the relays, the 4×800 team of Kimberly Fuentes Chavez, Katherine Benitez, Lauren Nadow, and Hazel Hatleberg came across in fourth place and the 4×400 relay quartet of Ashly Damas Ruiz, Leanny Sanchez Ynoa, Emily Singh, and Emelin Rosales earned sixth-place medals.
On the boys side, senior Ariel Chacon-Arena was the top point-scorer for the Red Devils. Ariel earned a GBL championship in the shot-put with a throw of 53’-1” and took second in the discus to tally 18 points on the day.
Senior Sherwin Kim also reached double-figures, scoring six points with a third-place finish in the 400 hurdles and four points with a fifth-place effort in the 110 hurdles.
Adonis Alvarez Umana was a triple-medalist, scoring 10 points, with a third in the javelin, a sixth in the shot-put, and an eighth in the discus;
A number of Red Devil teammates also turned in strong performances to score points for the Chelsea column on the scoresheet and win medals:
— Xavy Guzman took third place in the 400 dash;
— Bryan Amaya-Yanes grabbed a sixth-place medal in the 800;
— Carlos Perez-Acosta brought home a sixth-place medal in the mile;
— Leandro Castro grabbed a fourth-place medal in the 400 hurdles and a seventh place medal in the triple-jump;
— Younes Sharif earned an eighth-place medal in the 400 hurdles;
— Kevin Romero-Molina took home two medals with a third-place in the discus and an eighth-place in the shot-put; and
— Nathaniel Ramos Quijada earned a fourth-place medal in the high jump.
In the relays:
— The 4×100 quartet of Aiden Rivas-Ortega, Younes Sharif, Juan Portillo, and Nathanyel Ramos Quijada earned eighth-place medals.
— The 4×400 foursome of Sherwin Kim, Leandro Castro, Zakaria Moubtassim, and Xavy Guzman came across in fourth place to score five points for Chelsea.
— The 4×800 team of Eric Anderson, Kyle Leong, Carlos Perez-Acosta, and Bryan Amaya-Yanes won third-place medals.
