Rivera tosses no-hitter for CHS baseball

Senior captain Elijah Rivera delivered a performance to remember on Friday, May 2, tossing a no-hitter in a 10-0 mercy-rule win over Excel Academy.

The Chelsea Red Devils’ ace was locked in from the first pitch, striking out 11 batters and allowing just two base runners — both on walks — over five innings of work.

Rivera, who has served as a leader both on and off the field for the Red Devils, commanded the mound with confidence, mixing his fastball and breaking pitches to keep Excel’s hitters off balance all game long.

“Elijah set the tone right away,” said head coach Michael Lush . “He’s been our rock this season, and to see him go out and dominate like that, especially in his senior year, is something special. The whole team fed off his energy.”

Backed by a strong defensive effort, Rivera’s teammates helped preserve the no-hitter with clean plays in the field, including a diving catch in right field and a smooth double play turned by the infield in the third inning.

Offensively, Chelsea’s bats came alive early, jumping out to a 5-0 lead by the second inning and never looking back. Rivera also helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Senior infielder Xavier Santiago drove in three runs, while sophomore Louis Soto added two hits and a pair of stolen bases.

With the win, the Red Devils captured the first victory of the season. But the triumph was all about Rivera, who now adds a no-hitter to his growing list of accomplishments in a stellar senior campaign.

“Elijah’s been with us for four years, and he’s grown into the kind of player every coach wants,” said Michael Lush  “He’s a leader, a competitor, and today he showed everyone what he’s capable of.”
