CHS softball team opens 2025 season with 21-7 victory

The Chelsea High softball opened its 2025 season in a big way, chalking up a 21-7 victory over Roxbury Prep Monday afternoon at Carter Field.

Lady Red Devil sophomore captain Juju Hassell pitched an outstanding complete game with eight strikeouts. Hassell received strong support from her defense, led by junior captain Monica Cespedes, who turned in what CHS head coach Titus Manderson termed “a great game at shortstop, making multiple putouts and leading the infield.”

Senior captain Hazel Martinez played a solid game at third base and socked Chelsea’s first home run of the season.  Freshman standout Olivia Clark contributed significantly to the victory, playing a solid first base and going 4-for-4 at the plate.

Manderson and his crew will play a 19-game schedule this season. They will meet their seven Greater Boston League foes (Lynn Classical, Lynn English, Revere, Everett, Malden, Medford, and Somerville) twice each and will face non-league opponents Roxbury Prep, Tech Boston, Excel Academy (2), and East Boston.

The Lady Red Devils are scheduled to play at Tech Boston tomorrow (Friday) and at Everett on Monday before returning home to take on Malden at Carter at 4:00.

CHS baseball team hosts New Mission today

The Chelsea High baseball team will host non-league opponent New Mission today (Thursday). The opening pitch for coach Mike Lush and his crew is set for 3:30 at Carter Park.

“With the upcoming baseball season right around the corner, there’s a lot to be excited about,” said Lush. “This group has been putting in the work, showing up every day with the right mindset, and pushing themselves to get better. The energy at practice has been great, and the team is coming together in all the right ways.

“One of the biggest strengths this year is our senior leadership,” Lush continued. “We’ve got a solid group of upperclassmen who set the tone, hold their teammates accountable, and lead by example. Our captains (Xavier Santiago, Elijah Rivera, Michael Wagner, and Luedy Sanchez) have stepped up in a big way, making sure the team stays focused and locked in on our goals. Their experience and leadership will be key in navigating the challenges of the season.

“As always, success in this game comes down to preparation, and these guys have been putting in the work — whether it’s in the cage, on the field, or in the weight room. The commitment they’ve shown so far is a great sign of what’s to come,” said Lush.

“The schedule will be tough, but that’s what we want. The competition will push us to be at our best every single game. If we keep grinding and trusting the process, this team has the potential to do something special. It’s going to be an exciting season, and we can’t wait to get started,” the coach added.

Lush and his crew will play a 19-game schedule. They will meet their seven Greater Boston League foes (Lynn Classical, Lynn English, Revere, Everett, Malden, Medford, and Somerville) twice each and will face non-league opponents Roxbury Prep, New Mission, East Boston, Excel Academy, Tech Boston, and Brighton.

They will make the short trip across Chelsea Creek to East Boston tomorrow (Friday) and will host Everett on Monday at 4:00. They will travel to Malden next Wednesday.
