Chelsea Middle School Girls Basketball Team Begins Season with Three Victories

The Chelsea Middle School girls basketball team, under the leadership of head coach Bruce Harrison, is off to a 3-0 start with victories over Medford (42-20), Somerville (40-18), and Malden (38-8).

Lozaiya Santiago is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 20 points a game.

Harrison is considered one of the most successful coaches in the history of the Chelsea Youth Basketball League. An excellent tactician of the game, Harrison is clearly putting his positive imprint on the middle school girls basketball program.

Chelsea Athletic Director Amanda Alpert has been a big supporter of the program, which was launched during her tenure. Alpert is a 12-time All-American professional women’s tackle football player and eight-time Super Bowl champion. She retired from professional football following the 2023 season.

Thania Simon wins two medals at MSTCA Frosh-Soph Meet

Chelsea High track star Thania Simon brought home with two medals this past Sunday at the MSTCA’s Small School Freshman-Sophomore Meet at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Roxbury.

Thania grabbed fourth place in the long-jump with a leap of 16’8”. The Lady Red Devil sophomore was one of only four girls among the 60 competitors who broke the 16-foot mark and her jump was just four inches off the winning distance.

Simon also grabbed a sixth-place medal in the 300 dash with a sprint of 43.60.

Fellow sophomore Hazel Hatleberg competed in the 1000 meter event, clocking a time iof 3:45.15.

On the boys’ side, sophomore Xavier Guzman sped to an impressive 13th place finish  in the 600m dash (among the100 entries in that race) with a time of 1:32.53.

Teammate Carlos Perez-Acosta ran well in the 1000, coming across the line in 27th place in a clocking of 2:59.58. Philip Robles’s shot-put toss of 32’-1” placed him 32nd in that event.

The full CHS boys and girls indoor track and field teams are scheduled to resume their Greater Boston League dual meet-schedule tomorrow (Thursday) at the Reggie. The girls stand at 1-0 on the season and the boys are 0-1.

CHS boys host Brighton Friday The Chelsea High boys basketball team, which stands at 2-3 on the season, will entertain Brighton High School tomorrow (Friday) evening at the CHS gym. The opening tip for coach Cesar Castro and his crew is set for 6:00. The Red Devils will travel to Medford next Tuesday.
