Margaret Ellen McCarthy

December 2, 1929 – August 17, 2024

Relatives and friends are most kindly invited to attend a gathering and visitation for Margaret Ellen “Peg” (McIntyre) McCarthy on Wednesday. August 28 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Welsh Funeral Home, 718 Broadway, Chelsea.  The visitation will be Immediately followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Grace Church, 59 Nichols St., Chelsea at 12 Noon.  Services will conclude with interment at Glenwood Cemetery, Everett.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Margaret Ellen (McIntyre) McCarthy, 94, was a pious, faithful, generous, selfless, kind, caring, and fun-loving woman of grace and spirit. She died unexpectedly and peacefully on August 17th, her 61st Wedding Anniversary, leaving a hole in our hearts. Through a life made up of joy and pain, she always chose the joy, and viewed each day as a gift from God.

Margaret was the oldest daughter of nine children (Mark, Patrick, Billy, Johnny, Bea, Theresa, Paul and Ann), of Irish Immigrants, Mark and Margaret (Downes) McIntyre. Born in Brookline, MA, during the depression, “Peg/Peggy” was a dedicated and devoted big sister, friend, worker and athlete. She swam, bowled, played softball and tennis. She was especially proud of her 1000 laps challenge in the Brookline “tank”.

She worked for S.S. Pierce, Ledley Laboratories and trained with IBM. She had a wonderful fondness for Bearskin Neck, Rockport, always imparting us with great stories to tell and memories to share of The Lodge with her girlfriends, many of whom were lifelong friends. She was the utmost hostess who was well known for her Christmas Open Houses, always the second Saturday in December, to raise funds for the less fortunate of the Our Lady of Grace Parish.

She also loved spending time on Cape Cod with friends, taking a well-deserved weekend away once in a while. Peg was known to be seen around a casino, a small woman with a fanny pack at: Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, Twin Rivers, and most recently the Encore, playing the slots, winning, and then switching to Roulette.

In August of 1963, she married the love of her life: a widower with five young children, and they lived their years on Harvard St., Everett. Together they raised seven children: Sheila Mary (Craig Kimball); Michael Cormac (Lucy); Elizabeth “Betsy” Susan (Steven Perry); Andrew Gerard who predeceased her in October of 1983; Lois Eileen (Michael Lukas); Theresa Nora (Arthur Cornell); and Patrick Niall McCarthy.

Her “Precious Bob”, as she affectionately called him, died in April of 2010. They shared so much life and love together. They are now happily reunited in Heaven.

The family spent summers at Newfound Lake in Bristol, NH. There were many stories about the card games they played and the laughter that wafted throughout the Don and Gerry Cottages. Peg followed the Boston sports teams, her favorite being the Red Sox baseball team. She once commented that she loved baseball the most because you could nap through a couple of innings and it wouldn’t matter.

Peggy had an artistic side as well. There are several pieces of ceramics (lamps, Christmas trees, etc.) that she lovingly made and gifted away. There are numerous, beautiful, wood refinishing projects that are in abundance in her home. One thing we can all agree upon and kidded her about, was that she was not an artist in the kitchen. Peg lived in Winthrop, where she still enjoyed the ocean, a pool and all of her new friends and neighbors. She was a good driver, recently renewing her drivers’ license. After the passing of her beloved, Bob, her best friend, Pat, remained a constant companion, taking their daily walk together at O’Malley Park and enjoying a cup of tea in the afternoon.

Until her peaceful passing, she remained active, walking every day, driving herself to church and to her appointments, and entertaining everyone around her with her humor and wit. Those who knew her know the hole she has left behind and know how impossible it is to encapsulate what an incredible person she was.

Along with her children, Margaret is also survived by several loving grandchildren and great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; her brother, Paul and his wife, Janet; brother-in-law, Arthur “Butch” Harrington; her best friend, Pat; The Over-the-HIll friends; St Terese travel group and too many friends to count. We are grateful for the vibrant 94 years she blessed us with, and in awe of her loyalty and selflessness to her family and friends, and her pious devotion to her faith.

In lieu of flowers, Margaret has requested that you please consider a donation to The Andrew G. McCarthy Scholarship Fund, c/o Boston College High School, 150 Morrissey Blvd., Boston, MA 02125. To send expressions of sympathy, please visit www.WelshFH.com.
