Charles Marino

Retired Chelsea Police Officer and 55-Year Owner and Operator of New England Crane Service in Everett

Charles “Charlie” A. Marino passed away Monday morning, May 22 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers surrounded by the comfort and love of his family.  He was 80 years old.

Born in Chelsea, the son of the late Louis and Frances (LaRosa) Marino,  Charlie attended school in Chelsea and graduated from Chelsea High School, Class of 1960.  He attended classes at Bunker Hill Community College but soon enlisted in the US Army on January 29, 1960.  He was honorably discharged on February 4, 1963.  Charlie was the late owner and operator of New England Crane Service in Everett.  He owned the company for 55 years before retirement.  Charlie was also a police officer for the Chelsea Police Department, dedicating 15 years of service before retiring. 

During his retirement, Charlie enjoyed playing golf.  He recently took up woodworking and enjoyed spending time in his garage working on projects.  Charlie was a longtime Chelsea resident and recently moved back into the area after having lived in Saugus for the past several years.  Charlie will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

The beloved husband of Elaine M. (Sasso) of Chelsea, he was the father of Deborah Lochiatto of Peabody and Dina Pagliuca of Wakefield, stepfather of Charles and Richard Henry; the brother of the late Stephen Marino and Salvatore F. Marino, brother-in-law of Robert Sasso and cherished Papa of Jonathan, Kristina, Anthony and Michael.  He is also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.  

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Charlie’s visiting hours in the Carafa Family Funeral Home, 389 Washington Ave., Chelsea on Saturday, May 27 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 250 Revere St., Revere at 12 Noon.  Services will conclude with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.

Eleanor Hooton

Retired NYNEX Communications Manager

Eleanor (“Ellie”) A. Hooton, a resident of Melrose for more than 20 years, the beloved daughter of the late William A. and Vera F. (Batten) Hooton and dear sister to her late brother William F. (“Bill”) Hooten, passed away at home on May 20 at the age of 84.

Ellie was born and raised in Chelsea and graduated from Chelsea High School.  She began a more than 40-year career with New England Telephone and Telegraph as a telephone operator and advanced throughout her career, ultimately retiring in 1998 as a Communications Manager for NYNEX.

Ellie loved travelling, particularly with lifelong friends the late Clare Proctor and Jeanie Letizia, affectionately referred to as “the girls.”  Spending summers at Plum Island, eating Saturday night dinners in the North End, escaping to Hilton Head, SC for respites from New England winters, and exploring venues throughout the United States and Europe, Ellie was always happy to meet new people and experience newfound locales.

In addition to travel, Ellie also enjoyed gardening, which included spending volunteer time with the Melrose Garden Club.  She was also a regular volunteer at the Milano Family Senior Center in Melrose. While leaving Chelsea in 1999 was difficult, she made a wonderful transition and established herself within her new community.

Ellie is survived by her cousin, Anne (Alexander) McGravey of North Andover, her godson, Patrick McGravey and his wife, Amy Van Lauwe of Melrose, along their children Bennet and Alexander McGravey Van Lauwe, and second cousin, Kristopher McGravey and his wife, Maria McGravey of Peabody.  She is also survived by second cousins: Randy Goodell of Tomar, Portugal, Scott Goodell of Stockbridge, MA, and Dustan Goodell of Dallas, TX.   Many more loving relatives and friends, who all treasured their time with “Aunt Ellie” will miss her infectious laugh, her caring heart and her wonderful sense of humor.  It was also always greatly appreciated when she brought homemade baked goods to gatherings that were from her father’s “classic” recipe cards that will live on with friends and family members. 

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Ellie’s visiting hours in the Carafa Family Funeral Home, 389 Washington Ave., Chelsea today, Thursday, May 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. Her funeral will be held from the Funeral Home on Friday at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Blessed Mother of the Morning Star Parish/Our Lady of Grace Church, 59 Nichols St., Chelsea at 10 a.m.  Interment to follow in the family lot at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Steven Paradis

He Will Be Missed Beyond Words

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend Visiting Hours today, Thursday, May 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals, 262 Beach St., Revere for Steven W. Paradis, 61, who died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 20th when he was stricken at his home, later passing at the CHA – Everett Hospital. His funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Friday, May 26th  beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a Graveside Service at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

Steve was born on April 18, 1962 in Chelsea to his late parents, John and Ann M. (Dion) Paradis. He was raised in Chelsea with his five brothers. Steve was educated in both St. Rose of Lima Parochial School and Chelsea Public Schools and attended Chelsea High School. Steve spent his entire working career in a field that he was most passionate about, landscaping.

For many years, he worked at Hanscom Airforce Base as a groundskeeper. Due to his diligent and prideful work, this led him to personally maintain several of the General’s homes and for other officers as well. Steven later left and began working at Holy Cross Cemetery. He often would help his family and friends design both landscape and hardscape projects.

Steve married his love and best friend Michele “Mickey” (Burley) on May 6, 1988, and they recently celebrated their 35th  wedding anniversary, having been together for over 40 years. Steve was a man who loved his family, cherishing his children and grandchildren. He was a truly home body with his best pal “Tommy” by his side. He was a longtime member of the 52 Club in Chelsea.

The beloved husband of Michele M. “Mickey” (Burley) Paradis of Chelsea, formerly of Revere, he was the loving father of Stephanie A. Paradis of Everett, Devon M. Paradis of Revere and Steven W. Paradis and his fiancé, Makary Vath of Revere; cherished grandfather of Carlos, Mackie Joe and Jax; dear brother of Kevin Paradis, John Paradis, Mark Paradis and the late Richard and James Paradis. He is also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and he will be missed beyond words.
