Steph Simon named MVP at Coaches Meet

Chelsea High track superstar Stephanie Simon turned in a dominating performance at the State Coaches Meet that was held at Sharon High School this past Saturday.

“The State Coaches Meet is an invitational meet for athletes from all divisions with high qualifying standards,” said CHS head coach Cesar Hernandez.

Stephanie won the long jump with a leap of 18′-8.25″, which was more than a foot longer than her nearest competitor. Steph also captured the triple jump with a final landing of 37′-3.5″ and grabbed a sixth place medal in the 200 dash in a time of 26.43 seconds. Simon was named the Overall Top athlete of the meet for her dominating performance.

Other members of the Red Devils who competed in the meet and turned in strong performances included Justin Turner, who finished 15th in the two mile in a clocking of 10:13.96, and Jessica Martinez, who finished 18th in the discus with a throw of 87′-9″.

CHS track girls edged in meet with Shawsheen

The Chelsea High girls outdoor track & field team fell just  by a score of 73-63 in its meet last week with Shawsheen Tech. Stephanie Simon led the Lady Red Devils with wins in four events, the 100 dash (12.67), the 200 dash (26.68), the long jump (27′-9.5″), and the high jump (4′-8″), to score 20 points on the day.

Another big highlight for Chelsea was the winning performance by Ana Chang in the 400 hurdles in which Ana broke her own CHS school record by a second with a time of 68.87. Ana also took second place in the triple jump. Yaris Deras was the other first-place finisher for Chelsea, capturing the mile in a time of 6:12.

Lady Red Devils who added three points to the CHS side of the scoresheet with second-place performances were: Jocelyn Poste in the 100 hurdles, Pricilla Melgar in the two-mile run; Sandra Tun in the 100 hurdles; Marcela Castillo in the 800, Jeselle Renderos in the shot-put, and Ana Severino in the discus.

Adding single points for the Chelsea cause with third-place efforts were: Sade Rosales in the mile, Denali Mejia in the 400 dash, Jessica Martinez in the discus, and Saira Carreto in the two-mile. The quartet of Castilo, Mejia, Deras, and Carreto won the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 5:10.

Coach Cesar Hernandez and his crew will complete in this weekend’s Commonwealth Athletic Conference Meet.

Boys track competes vs. Shawsheen Tech

Although the Chelsea High boys track team dropped a 107-29 decision to Shawsheen Tech, there were a number of Red Devils who turned in fine performances. Justin Turner reigned supreme once again in the two-mile run, outdistancing the field in a time of 10:38.98. Justin also took second place in the 400 dash in 54.9.

Jazmany Reyes was victorious in the mile with a clocking of 5:00.73. 

Red Devils who scored three points with second-place performances were: Ruben Padilla in the mile in 5:15.10; Anthony Del Rosario with a shot-put toss of 36′-11″; Richard Flores in the discus with a spin of 84′-8″; and Josh Suggs with a high jump of 5′-2″.

Adding single points with third-place finishes were: Ian Padilla in the two-mile in 11:21.66; Emmanuel Simon in the 100 dash in 12.64; Oscar Amaya in the 800 in 2:16.59; Suggs in the 200 dash in 24.95; Rigo Flores with a shot-put throw of 36′-9″; and Jose Gutierez with a triple jump of 35′-3″. 

The Red Devils will compete in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Meet this weekend.

Highlights this week for CHS baseball team

Although the Chelsea High baseball team dropped its three contests this past week, there were some highlights for the Red Devils.

In a contest with Nashoba Tech, Sergio Maldonado struck out 11 opponents in five innings. D.J. Valdes had a pair of base hits and Joel Vidal singled to pace the the CHS offense.

In a contest with Minuteman last Thursday, Adrian Colon, Santiago Quintero, Anthony Ramos, and Nate Rosario all had base hits.

In Friday’s encounter with Lynn Tech, Dan Guilamo and Christian Ortiz both doubled.

Coach Rich Wilson and his squad will play at Mystic Valley today (Thursday) and at South Boston on Saturday. They will trek to Lynn Tech next Tuesday.
