Postal Service retiree; fought in World War II Battle of the Bulge and was a German Prisoner of War

Harry Wellins, a native of Chelsea and long-time resident of Pembroke Pines, Florida, died on December 23 at the age of 96.

He was a proud World War II army veteran, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and was a POW in Germany.  He retired from the U.S. Postal Service.  Mr. Wellins remained an avid fan of the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots.

He was the son of the late Selig and Rachel Wilensky, brother of the late Benjamin Wellins, Martha Kempner and Belle Chernak and step brother of  Lorraine Pearl and his surviving stepsister Joan Chernoff.  He is also survived by his niece, Beverly Sherwat of Washington, D.C., and three  nephews: Robert Chernak of Gaithersburg, Maryland, James Kempner of Jacksonville, Florida, and Richard Wellins of San Francisco, California.  He was the great uncle of six and great great uncle of eight.

Services will be held in the Washington, D.C., area with burial at the military cemetery in Quantico, Virginia.
